Hi guys,
I am going to reapplying this coming cycle. How should I be changing my personal statement? Is there anything else I need to do? Any advice would be appreciated. Also im planning to submit my application mid-late June this cycle. Thats not too late, correct?

We would need to know what was in your first PS to give you that advice my dude. Mid to late June is definitely not too late, though.

My general rule is to show what skills you’ve learned from your work/activities and to be reflective. For the PS, have a compelling reason for why medicine and personal background add-ons to back that up. I completely redid my PS with a more focused narrative, rather than a broad one.

Do you know why you couldn't get in the first time? Was the feedback that your PS lacked certain qualities?

If you're a re-applicant then you should:

• take at least one cycle off in between cycles to build the parts of your app that were lacking - EC's in particular, but also GPA and MCAT repair if needed
• use the MSAR to remake your school list. Look at schools whose mission your passions fit with. Your chances will be increased if there is a reason above the numbers for you to attend these schools
• Rewrite ALL materials. Especially if you are applying to some of the same schools. You don't want them to see you didn't take the time to change your PS, Activities, Secondary essay, etc. Ideally, if you've taken the time off and built the holes in your app, then these parts should be different now.

Thanks for the reply guys! I have received feedback from a couple of schools that I got rejected from. Based on those schools my Gpa, MCAT and clinical/volunteering are great. They also said there were no problems with my LOR. Although, one school did recommend that I get a letter from someone who can write a more detailed letter as my letters lack depth. Generally, I did not get negative feedback for my personal essay. But, yes, they believed that my secondaries could've been written better and I need to speak more about my commitment to medicine.


I am planning to apply with the same MCAT and GPA. Three of my letter writers are updating their letters and I'm getting an additional one. I continued my experiences and started a new one as medical/clinical assistant. I will also be shadowing a physician soon. I believe my school list is good according to my stats but will be adding more schools to my application this cycle. Hopefully all this is enough? I'm currently having trouble changing this personal statement because I did spend a lot of time writing and rewriting this one. Apparently, it wasn't good enough.

I know what you mean. I spent a long time thinking about my personal statement and countless times rewriting it and I rarely write anything worthwhile (in fact, I consider myself to be bad at writing), but I think this personal statement was good. In my case, I think my lower academics was what did me in, which I made sure to continue adding on by taking classes this past year and continue taking classes this upcoming year. I added a new LOR from my manager at the hospital I work at and will rewrite all my secondary applications and meaningful experiences to reflect my new experiences.

But still unsure if keeping my PS largely similar (with slight changes in wording and also adding 2 sentences about how my new job contributes to the overall theme of the essay) will be frowned upon 🙁

I spent a long time thinking about my personal statement and countless times rewriting it and I rarely write anything worthwhile (in fact, I consider myself to be bad at writing), but I think this personal statement was good. Thanks for the advice, I am going to change an entire paragraph to reflect my newer experience and do some slight changes to the rest of the personal statement.

I haven't submitted mine yet, but I am giving myself a deadline to submit it by the end of this week ideally or by next tuesday latest. How about you?

I think I will probably get around submitting at around June 20. Hope thats not too late.

As long as you submit in June, it shouldnt be too late
