I am currently on four waitlists with no acceptances and I had some questions on what to do when reapplying. First, I was wondering if it is best to have new recommendation letter writers or to have people update old ones. I was also wondering how to approach the personal statement and other essays. For the personal statement should i completely redo it or just make significant changes to what I have? And for the essays about extracurriculars and secondaries should I completely re write them or just update them here and there?
What feedback have you gotten regarding your previous application? I would probably have updated reference letters in preparation for a new application. As for the personal statement, you can't tell with many admissions committees, but there are some that would like to see an improved or new personal statement and other essays. I would definitely update any extracurriculars that were current during your previous application.
The few schools that have given me feed back so far said a large part of the reason I was rejected/waitlisted was because I applied late. I went to a quarter system school so my transcripts were not ready until late June. One school said the one year of research I had was not enough which is something I've been fixing (I have been doing research at another lab for almost a year now).
Thanks for your other advice. I think I'll redo my personal statement, and I 'll start adding to/rewriting my other essays.
