Hi, can anyone help me with this.

I am a PGY1 in Family Practice..how do I go about applying for Internal Medicine. Do I apply through ERAS as categorical or do I go to find a resident.com.

How does it work..where do I apply for Internal medicine even though I am in an FP program now??

Thanks.

Many IM programs will give you credit for some of the rotations you will do in FM. I switched to EM but I did interview at a couple of IM programs (as a back-up as I would rather have a red hot poker shoved up my rectum than be in the Specialty That Dare Not Speak Its Name) and at one they said they would give me "credit" for seven months.

Now, this is highly program dependent and difficult logistically. I don't think you can start as an IM second year after an FP intern year because all of the pediatrics and OB-Gyn months will not count at all.

But, with that being said, you can call around now and see if any programs have open intern spots (hell, it's only three months into intern year) or you can gut out your FP year and go through ERAS for next year's match. You are not really bound by your contract in the sense that if you want to leave, nobody is going to stop you.

But if you decide on ERAS you'd better get on it because time is short and you have a lot to do.

But you just mentioned its name 35 words previously!

😉

but, can you participate in ERAS after matching the year prior? I think you have to look for a program and see if you can transfer to first year IM.

You can participate in ERAS and the match, but also can sign outside the match. One of the best things to do is apply via ERAS to programs, and then in your personal statement (or when you inteview) make it clear that you can start early if they have an open spot.

Out of curiosity, why are you guys leaving FM?

Oh god, please don't get Panda started!

I'm transferring out of psych into IM/FM (primary care). I chose to go through the match with the hopes of scrambling in somewhere if I don't match like everyone else, or finding someplace that has an open spot (I have IM here looking out for one for me).

So far, the interviews are 50/50 - two invites, two rejects - so its definitely doable - but I think it would have been easier to go directly and transfer out (cheaper than flights/interviews etc, not competing against all the fresh 4th years!) You could do a little of both - ask your IM program to send you openings AND go through the match, that way you get a lot more bases covered.

Good luck, I hope it works out for yoU!

Poety 🙂

And because the FM program that he went to is known far and wide as a dump. they've since recently closed their residency.

Panda left FM because he didn't want to be in FM in the first place. No big shocker there.

Right. And I don't believe I have ever said anything bad about Family Medicine as a specialty, just the way it was being presented at a certain now cosmetically enhanced sow.
