Hi everyone,

I was just wondering what people thought (or if anyone had experience) about trying to apply for a PGY2 Rad while doing a prelim year??
The conventional wisdom (I'd heard) was that trying to schedule interviews while doing internship is difficult to manage.

I'm a pretty average applicant, I think... Step I 230s, Step II 220s, average grades.

Would there be any benefit for me to do a prelim year now -- which might limit my opportunities to interview??

Thanks!

How would that work? If you matched into a PGY2 rads program would you then just have a year off before starting rads?

U could also try radiology thru the DIRECT pathway. I looked into it and many of these programs want some resident with some clinical years under their belt. Some even take u after u do 3 years of medicine

holla!!

Thanks for the responses~

The way it would work is: apply to Rad now to start in July 2008
I may have a chance to do a prelim year off-cycle, starting soon, that would finish way before I'd need to report for Radiology in July 08...

So sorry if I was unclear before...I'm not doing any internship now, but one may be available to start soon -- and my question was, how much value is there in doing it now (getting it over with) versus having a more flexible timeline that will let me interview anywhere, at anytime....

I would sit out a year and apply to as many programs as possible, to give you the most flexibility for interview dates. Unless you will have a flexible internship, its impossible to do more than 7 or so interviews. Think about it: you will have to take the day off before to fly into your interview city, then take the day of the interview off as well. You only get 15 days off, on average. Not all programs let you take a day here and there. Some will require that you take a 1 or 2 week block at a time. Thats a very bad position to be in.

If you are doing a surgery prelim, you are up a creek. Thats not to say it can't be done.

Some friends of mine didn't match in ortho the first time around, so they did prelim surgery years at a coastal ROCKSTAR institution and ended up getting spots in ortho and rads, respectively, outside the match, but these guys had good numbers to begin with (both 1st quartile, Step 1~240-250.)

Good luck.

Hey thanks Hans,

Yeah I was kinda feeling the same way -- like right now, the most important thing is to get a rads spot (and I need to interview to do that). And I don't think anyone will be impressed because I'm doing a prelim year.

So I decided not to go for the open prelim spot and feel pretty good about the decision.

A few hours later, I got my first rads interview invite and I could accept it without having to notify any one or ask to switch call.

So thanks!

Thats great news! Best of luck! :luck:

when you guys refer to "taking a year off" - what exactly does that mean? fellowship? unemployment? more loans? are you trying to improve your application meanwhile, or simply making the application process easier to navigate?

i hope someone can clarify this. i am a US-IMG wanting to do rads. i suspect a fellowship after graduation will be in the cards in order to match anywhere or line up a position.

thanks, as always, for sincere and informative responses . . .
