Hey all,

I applied/interviewed for Surgery-Categorical programs only and didn't match. So I'm going to SOAP, mostly likely for a Prelim spot.

When I apply to Categoricals for next year's match, could I still use the same Recommendation Letters from this year? How much of this year's ERAS application material could be carried over?

Thanks

You will need a letter from your PD from your prelim program as well, but everything else could be similar. You should write a new PS too.

Your best bet is to scramble into a PGY1 spot at a place with a categorical program - if you do well, you may have an inside track. The odds are stacked against you though.

Good luck.

For a prelim spot, some programs have a track record of either taking their own prelims or helping them match elsewhere if they don't have space. Easier to say than do, but try to find out about the track record of the program.

Certainly if you impress people, letters from folks who have worked with you as an attending, rather than a med student are going to mean more. But you had better plan on wowing people with your work ethic.
