So in general does reapplying to the same program, even if you have an updated letter or a successful intern year under your belt (in another specialty) not bode well for an applicant that they maybe liked from last year? will you still be viewed as a re-applicant? i hear statistically it is harder.

say if you applied to two specialties last year and didn't match to the one you wanted, now if you interview again at that same place (which maybe gave you good feedback), now they will know you applied to two fields, but at least you know what you want this time around since you now have clinical experience in one of the two fields?

I wouldn't pin all my hopes on getting into a program that already rejected you once. It doesn't hurt to try again if you can spare the time to interview there again, so you might as well apply again, but I would also send applications to new programs where you don't have any track record.

No, I didnt mean programs that rejected me, I meant programs that interviewed me before but where I obviouly did not match...For example, I know of someone who transferred to his #1 on the ROL outside the Match after an intern year at another program... Of course that was OUTside the Match...

NRMP doesn't have statistics about reapplicants, but now you will be an independent applicant rather than a US graduating seniors. But independent applicants are a waste basket group which includes IMGs, DOs, US graduates from previous years. If you look at the data for independent applicants, then you will see the rate of matching is much lower. According to aPD from this forum, unless a program goes into its previous year's file or a PC/PD remembers you, ERAS doesn't tell the program that you are applying to the program for a second time. Of course, the program will able to tell that this is your second match as you CV will indicate that you have done an intern year.

You can't change what has happened already, so I think you should go ahead and apply to programs that you are interested in. No one will be able to speculate if the same programs (that you applied to before) will invite you this time around. I would just be honest in your PS and your interviews about why you are changing specialties.

What I meant was the programs I am planning to reapply to will remember me because they gave me good feedback, even if I didn't rank them highly or they didn't rank me highly...
