reapplying this year

Hi, will applying with a low MCAT this year hurt me if I don't get in anywhere and reapply next year (hopefully with a much improved MCAT)?

Are you applying to DO schools as well? If no, why not? If you're talking "low" for MD schools, you'll have a lot higher chance w/ DO... and why in the world would you want to wait another year vs be a Dr. 1 year sooner and make Dr. money 1 year sooner? And how do you know you can improve your MCAT?

I haven't applied to DO schools, but at this point, it's probably a bit too late.

So right now I'm planning on not applying to any med schools this year; I will improve my MCAT for next year to be a competitive applicant, and reapply next year.

I'm positive I can improve my MCAT scores, since I just took the first one with very little prep and got a 24. I plan on serious MCAT studying this year.

Is it a wise idea to take the MCAT in May if I want my applications in early? My classes end in mid- April, so I want to have a month of solid study time before the MCAT. Or is this test date late?

Finally, what should I do next year? I will graduate this spring.... I'm currently planning to add a minor and stay another year. Does that sound like a decent plan?

Thanks!

I don't blame you, I applied this year with an OK mcat but since I'm applying as an international student I might not get in anywhere, so I will have to retake it as well.

What I plan to do is continue to be involved in research, and even maybe just continue to take 1 class per quarter so I am still involved in school. (Unless your over the unit cap). Try to stay involved, maybe find a volunteering job and keep going at it. In anycase, keep your head up and eyes on the prize, one year in the major scheme of things is NOTHING!

why not apply to a med school in your country? I understand u.s. has the best med schools (i'm pretty sure this is true) but to wait extra years for the chance?

why not simultaneously apply for med school in your own country during this cycle?

just curious.

I applied two years. The second time with an MCAT only 2 points higher.

I would highly suggest working for a year, instead of adding a minor. This is for many reasons:

1. I learned so much about being a "grown-up" when I had to balance rent, taxes, groceries, a regular 8-5, etc. without the help of loans (or parents).
2. I got great experience in a doctor's office that a minor would have never brought me.
3. Minors counts for next to nothing.
4. Having a year off from studying was the. best. thing. EVER.

Because I'm a refuge who can't go back to my country, and I'm waiting to be naturalized, thats why...

Went to HS and College here and intend to live here for the rest of my life.
