For those that didn’t get in the first time, do you have to make a whole new adea pass application or can you just use the same letters, deans letter, etc from the year before without requesting it all all over again?

You have to request them all again through the ADEA pass application.

Also, if the materials you submitted previously “didn’t work,” why would you just want to submit them again? Do you expect a different outcome? Probably should make some positive changes.

I agree with Big Hoss - I reapplied to OMFS residency. Acted like I was starting from scratch and wanted to show as much improvement in every area on the application as possible. Glad I did, I matched this year. Don't cut corners, do it the right way and you won't have any regrets.

What kinds of things did you change/do?

Programs will certainly look at your PS - I pretty much started from scratch utilizing my DS PS and my first PS from applying to residency as a guide (they obviously had pertinent information) to write my new PS. I also got all brand new LOR's. I asked the best possible people I could think of and worked extremely hard to show them my value and how much it meant to me be an OMFS. I worked with them as much as possible within my control as an intern so they could see my dedication, perseverance, bedside manner, and the list goes on. I also used a shotgun approach and applied to 30+ programs - I realize this is different in residency as for DS - when I applied to DS I applied to only 6 schools my first round and did not get in, then I applied to 10-12 the second go around. The first few sentences I am describing my application into OMFS residency; however, I took that same approach when reapplying to DS for the second time.

I also did a two year masters program to prove to the schools I could handle a very rigorous science curriculum and retook the DAT.

My final piece of advice is, don't be one of these applicants who applies and applies and applies without changing something. I knew that my second time applying I was going to do everything in my power to have the absolute best application I could have - I did it with the changes I mentioned above.

I hope this helps to some regard! Good luck.

May I ask which dental school you went to?

Thank you! Non-Cat internship, retook CBSE, new LORS, completely new PS. I can answer anything else you have questions on if you DM me. I am happy to help.

The pass application program changed for the 19-20 cycle so everyone this year had to start over completely. In previous years I know you always needed new rec letters, but from what I've heard some stuff like extracurricular descriptions and basic info carry over
