Hi

I have a question about the recommendation letter. So my neighbor, who is a dental school clinical professor, says he can write a recommendation letter. what do I categorize it as (Science Professor, etc)?

He is a MD, and he is not my college professor. So....

So he doesn't fulfill the requirements for a LOR at a dental school then. Sorry to have to drop that bomb! Find some others that do. They (most schools) want a LOR from a professional dentist, and 2 of your university professors. I don't have a nice answer for you on that as he'd be a great LOR for med school but he just doesnt have the qualifications for you in this case. If you really want to risk it, you can still just put him down as your dentist LOR. I wouldnt.

Usually the breakdown for LoRs go like this:

2 university professors (science)
1 dentist
1 misc (family friend, research/internship mentor, other professor, etc.) - optional

Some schools don't even make it mandatory to get one from a dentist, so just make sure when you look at the criteria at each school you're applying to

Most schools only require 3 letters (preferably in the form of a committee letter if your undergrad offers one), but it won't hurt to get a 4th if you feel that your neighbor will write you a really strong recommendation

I had 4 in my application and got accepted, so I don't think it matters how many you have. What matters is that all of them are strongly written and don't make you look bad lol
