I am a wide eyed senior in highschool with dreams and aspirations of one day becoming an anesthesiologist. Everyday, I dream of being yelled at by some @$$hole surgeon while I spray sleeping gas into his face. 😉

I have a 1970 on the sat, and will attend some UC. ( UCI or UCSD most likely) Through this, I know I have a shot. Now, for the real question:

Looking back on your career choice and the sacrifices you have made on your way to your goal, would you recommend to me following through with this career? Or should I major in Computer Science and work for MS?

It all depends what you want. Like that completely ambiguous answer?

Hey, go for it man. I'm in the same boat as you. 😀

That's fantastic. Just fantastic. Your zeal shines like a beacon through the fog and dreariness of Med. School. You sir, have inspired me to become an anesthesiologist. 👍👍👍

I think you should refocus on enjoying your time as a high school senior and college student. Study hard but have LOTS of fun, because once it's over, it's really over. I loved college and really miss those days. You never know where life will lead you, so recommending any career that you won't be a part of for nine years really is a waste of time.

Its hard to tell sometimes genuine from fake.

I'd say this is a fakey, Venty.

Like a fakey done by our homey Noy on the slopes.

If you were a wide eyed senior in high school you wouldnt know jack s h it about surgeons and anesthesiologists.

So for the record,

Trolling won't be tolerated here.

SDN Anesthesia is back on track.

We aint gonna get into a fight with you, Slim.

We're just gonna eliminate you.

Trolls will be assassinated quickly and efficiently.

Jet pulls out the dusty thirty-ought-six from the corner, chambers a load, assesses the sight as best he can.....

settles in, sights the troll in the crosshairs......

...takes a deep breath, and exhales....

....no movement now....total zen....

BOOM.

Bullet runs true through trolls cranium, leaving him lifeless.

One shot.

One kill.

Hey, not everyone claiming to be in high school is a troll. Yes, we may be seniors in high school, but that doesn't mean we don't know "jack s h it about surgeons and anesthesiologists." I mean, of course, I don't know how to put anyone to sleep or anything (except with my two fists but that's a whole different story 😀 ) But SDN has been informative enough where we have a small idea of what it's like, and it seems appealing. Now I don't know the full extent of the troll problem this forum had before it got "back on track" but it must have been hell, you guys are all paranoid.

 While my troll-dar isn't nearly as fine tuned as many on this board, I think this dudes alright in my book.....

Hey man, if you're for real, I can tell you that I haven't regreted my decision to go to medical school. Granted, the hardest parts (3rd year and then residency etc.) are still to come, but here are a few positives from an MSII.

1) most of your classmates are pretty cool, intelligent, high functioning people.
2) it's a challenge, and even pretty fun to learn the stuff we learn and in the depth that we learn it. so, you develop a true competency over time.
3) while there are many cost/benefit analyses that can be applied to this whole journey, the fact is that you will get a decent job and will have a potential lifelong career in a pretty cool field.

The first few years of med school really aren't too exciting. Mostly just learning a lot of facts. But, I can't think of too many better ways to spend ones time. That's just me.

You should look up what zeal means. I think you meant enthusiasm.

Car bombers and suicide bombers have zeal.

Tony Robbins has zeal.

You will change a lot as a person before you get to, much less graduate, med school. Also, it's almost impossible to know what area of medicine you will be interested in until you've learned A LOT more about medicine (the basic science stuff), and then tried out some different specialties (your clinical rotations) - if you keep an open mind you might be surprised at where your interests and talents lie.
don't mean to cut you down, best of luck to you, but it's naiive to think you can pick a specialty rigtht now. Just be glad you've maybe picked a general profession. And don't F up in college.

my school used to have a program where 50 hs seniors from this state were conditionally accpeted to med school, provided they keep their undergrad pre-req grades up. I was one of those 50, and here I am, about to graduate from med school. Many of my 50 classmates, however, changed their minds about medicine in college, and actually 1 or 2 of them changed their minds in med school (an expensive change of heart). So keep an open mind.

zeal n;
fervor for a person, cause, or object; eager desire or endeavor; enthusiastic diligence; ardor.

Yep, think I used the correct verbiage.

I seriously am looking into a medical career, I'm merely gathering information on some of the more appealing fields to get a very general and vague idea of what I want to do. Thanks for the replies, well besides that dude with the toddler for his avatar. Methinks he plays too much fps.

FYI, many of us have been on these forums for a long time now. Over the years, there have been many trolls that have come out of the woodwork to antagonize the physicians on this forum.

A word of advice is to lay low for awhile. Check out previous posts with the search engine (not perfect, I know). Overtime, when dudes get to know you, your questions will be answered accordingly. Again, there have been MANY trolls that have canvassed this forum with the sole intent of misrepresenting themselves in order to cause trouble. Hence the response thus far. It's hard to explain this to those not exposed to this history.

Huh... that would explain Sgt. Headshot back there...

Alright, well thank you all for your replies. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

So I'm a zealot then? Pffhaha

You'll find that the word zeal always, at least in the colloquial sense, has a negative connotation to it.

However, feel free to use it as you wish. Especially in your medical school essay. Tell them your zeal for medicine is unstoppable. They'll think your nuts.

What others have said about changing during college is true. Therefore make choices that will leave as many options available as possible.

You should major in Computer Science if you have a true interest and get the prerequisites for med school also. Then if you still want to be a physician you can go to med school. The Computer Science degree will serve you well and you will have more options both in and out of medicine. You will also be less likely to look back and say "could've, should've, wish I would've".

Now, unless passion has a negative connotation aswell.....

Use of the phrase " my zeal for medicine is unstoppable" is primitive, as unstoppable is too reminiscent of Unreal Tournament for me to type with a straight face. I would rather say, " I have an absolute zeal for medical studies" or something along those lines instead.

Looks like you need to study a little bit more for those SAT's.

However, we bicker for no reason. We both have moustaches ( I assume that is you in your avatar) and therefore we may settle this matter civilly, as I don't like 500 post flamewars. The beauty of the english language lies in its ability to be manipulated and changed to the extent where an entire country can be swept in fervent nationalism. We may disagree on it's uses, but so do many other people, and as Kurt Vonnegut would say, "So it goes". ( Great author, btw.)

That being said and done, can you close this topic for me? I can't seem to find the close topic button, so thanks if you do. I'll volunteer at my local hospital nad get a better feel of the location before I make any decisions.
:luck:
^ Would be luckier if it was a five leaf clover.
