Hello,

Has anyone gotten a "No Pass" in a Pass/no Pass course but still gained acceptance into a ~top 20 medical school?

I will have submitted my application by the time my grades come out for Spring, and I was just wondering about the affect of a No Pass on admission.

If I were accepted, would this be basis of rescinding the acceptance?

Do secondaries ask for your spring grades? Or will I not have to notify my spring grades until I send the school my final transcript after deciding to matriculate there (assuming acceptance?).

The course of discussion is a non-major non-science class that I do not need to graduate.

Thanks for any input!

I'm not sure its effect on your chances of being accepted. But they assume you're going to pass all your classes and can/will rescind the offer. Why would you not pass a pass/no pass non science class?

Why in the world would you risk any acceptances you get by taking a class in your final semester that you do not need to graduate and may not pass?

I'm assuming you are taking this course out of personal interest since I cannot think of any other reasons you'd be taking it. If you want to take a course just out of interest that is not going to fulfill any requirements for you, you should audit it. (the last sentence is not a general statement, it applies specifically to classes which you don't think you'll do well in when taken your last semester) It is my understanding that there is no requirement you list all the courses you're taking on your current/future courses on the AMCAS, and assuming this is correct, I would audit the course and leave it off the AMCAS completely so there are no questions about why you are not taking it for a grade or at least for credit.

I was taking the course out of need to satisfy 12 units for financial aid. Because I had some family problems, I had to leave school for weeks at a time to take care of my grandpa back at home. I still studied for the exams, but with missing notes and doing my best to catch up, I ended up not passing. It was not due to a lack of effort or anything. The circumstance just didn't work out unfortunately.

If your application is stellar enough for Hopkins or Harvard (etc.), it probably won't kill your chances, though you will have to explain it. I hate to criticize your grammar, since this is merely a message board, but if you explain your circumstances in writing, please make sure you do a better job than you did here. But assuming you have fantastic stats, it shouldn't hurt you. I'm just curious...did your other grades also suffer? If so, you might consider applying next year to avoid speculation as to your "downward trend." If not, apply now and be prepared to discuss it.

i was worried about this and contacted the school i was accepted to. they said it was okay. however, my situation was a little different from yours in that I already graduated and was just taking some classes at the local CC during my year off. in the end, though, i passed, so it didn't really matter...

First, wait to get into medical school. If you already submitted your application, they won't see your last semester grades until you have been accepted.

Second, make sure you are able to fully explain why you did not pass the class. (forgot you enrolled in it, family issues, etc)

Third, relax, there is nothing you can do,. Wait to for an acceptance before trying to figure out your next step. The application process is already stressful enough, you don't need to add something you can't control.

good luck

I seriously doubt that ANY school will accept a student with a Failed or Not Passed course, without having the student RETAKE the course to prove that he/she got the material at some point.

My advise is, retake the class ASAP. If you get asked about it, then your updated transcript will show that you eventually passed the class.

*Raises hand*

Although to be fair it was my state school. Contrary to popular belief, it really isn't the end of the world. Let me guess, you made it P/NP because you were taking the class for S&G's and wanted to guard your GPA, then didn't take it seriously? You probably made the right decision in taking it P/NP, as I'm pretty sure NP on your transcripts doesn't look nearly as bad as an F. Some secondaries ask you to re-enter your grades over again, and if you've already submitted your AMCAS, you'll definitely have to send an update (for spring quarter in general) to the schools that don't.

Anyway, I had 5 interviews and it never came up in a single one, so it can't be that big of a problem. If they do ask, just tell the truth (had to prioritize, other classes were tougher than you expected), but as long as it's not part of a pattern, I really don't think it's a big deal...
