This is my first post so please bear with me. I used the search function and couldn't really find the answers to my questions.

I recently graduated with a DMD and need malpractice insurance to obtain my license. I have a decent understanding of occurrence vs claims-made policies but don't really have much of an idea as to an average cost for a new dentist. I'm leaning towards a claims-made policy with tail coverage, but don't know how long the tail coverage should be? I would assume long enough to cover my State's statute of limitations on malpractice lawsuits?

Also, to complicate my situation further, I'm recovering from a surgery and will require another in the near future (6 - 24 months), so my ideal job would be somewhere that offers loan-repayment and a salary since I'll be unable to work for a month or two; so I'll be working in public health hopefully, and I know that they sometimes pay for your malpractice insurance.

Any thoughts, opinions, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure where you are practicing, but I was able to obtain a $1000000/$3000000 occurence policy for $50 my first year. I have EDIC. I know MedPro offers a similar rate for new dentists.

Hup

I know someone in NJ who's very helpful. He set me up with malpractice and disability insurance. PM me if you want his contact info.

Occurance is cheaper but not good in the long run. I think I paid around 500 my first year for claims made. They let you pay quarterly so it's no big deal. I pay about 1200 now..4th year out.

Many places have great rates for the first few years -- you haven't had any patients so they don't expect any claims!

I'm in my 4th year out now and pay ~$1,500 a year for MedPro for $5mil/$7mil coverage.

how is occurrence cheaper??
