Guys the recession is in full swing with layoffs on a daily basis. What will be its impact on universities. Will they lower tuition? Really afraid with the huge tuition and the job scenario.Does anyone else think of this?

Interesting point.
Although I don't think tuition will be lowered. Not unless the people who do business w/ Schools lower prices/ if schools themselves have lay offs etc. But there is a shortage of dental educators..so.

As far as stress in the economic climate is concerned, you have company. I loose sleep over this daily.

I am hopeful from President Obama. I am sure he will get USA back on track.

I am surprised that there are not many replies. With jobless scenario and homes being foreclosed getting a $200K loan seems a lot overwhelming assuming that I even get accepted.

Scenario #1 - you get accepted into a school that starts later in the year-BU, NUY start late July. You have close to 6 months time.

Scenario #2 you get picked off a wait list for a school whose start date is fairly imminent- UPENN (March end, LLU March). That's 2 months. Or to other schools that start in- April-may (USC, UMN, UTHSCSA, UMDNJ, UCLA), June(UCSF) or July(Pacific). I am probably missing quite a few in the list.

Point being you have anywhere from 2 - 6 months to get a cosigner/ get the loan. The the course itself is 2-3 years. Then, depending on the bank you have 6-9 months of grace period before repayment. That's close to 3+ years total. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng time to go. By then we should see some turn around.

If you have a cosigner w/ decent credit history, you could get the loan w/ minimum fuss. Or even if there is a little fuss/ documentation etc. you are ahead in the game, really. Think about it. Think of people who don't have cosigners. Or if you get high APR now, you can think of refinance when you graduate.

The people who are really screwed IMO are those who graduated in 2008/will graduate 2009 and are location specific.

i too spend sleepless nights pondering about this. i ve been accepted in bu and waitlisted at upenn and umn. as i dont have a cosigner, i ll need to arrange for loans from my home country (India). besides, the uncertainty of my husbands job makes it seem like a gamble for me to go ahead with the advanced standing program. only solace being that the program in bu starts in july, so that buys me a few months of time.

Guys,do you know on an average how long it takes for a foreign trained dentist after graduation fresher to get a dentist job.My husband's friends wife took 6 months to get one 2 years ago.

In my point of view tuition will be lower and they have to wait until USA will back on the trail. GOD Bless America

Depends on location- eg- CA bay area, LA area and San Diego area are pretty (very) saturated. Mid West is good I am told.

It depends ...

I got my current job within a month, some of my friends took a little longer, and some had jobs waiting for them right after graduation, it depends on the geographic location, individual situation, and how hard you look or network, among dozens of other factors.

I only know a couple people from my class that are still looking for a job, but they are in LA area. And I think dentists will servive the crisis. Maybe you will not be able to get that huge house and a Mersedes as soon as you would like to, but you will be able to put bread and butter on your table and pay your loans back.

yes,one has to think about the time required to change visa status also.

How much time it takes to convert F1 to H1 generally ? Does dentist have any priority ingetting H1? And also do they get any priority in green card procesing? How many mths we can work on opt? Please do shed some light on this matter!

rules are same for all the proffesional

there is no separate quata for dentist

we can work for 12 month on opt

for h1 you have to find sponsor then you have to apply on 1st april of every year

for applycation you have to make petition and petition is made by lawyer behalf of us they will charge usualy $2500-3000,government fee for h1 is $1500 and some other expence.

if your petision will apruve you have to appear for interview at us consulate and then if visa apruved you can start your job on h1 basis from 1st october but not before that

there is no special category for dentist for green-card

again green-card is very very very complex procedure and it all depend on luck
how much time take to get green-card some get in 3-6 month and some take 5-7 years

it all depends on government stratergy and luck

so in short f1 to h1 and green-card is whole long long procedure and you will wast half of life in this procedure

good luck

I agree with dentousa.F1 to green card is like a decade process,i can say that for indian origin.Other countries might vary.Even if someone has green card it will still take longer to get a new job.Dentist might be spared but recession impact will be on one and all thats for sure.

How close to graduation can we start corresponding with employers realistically.Since license takes a few days beyond the test to reach can we apply conditionally- to have job in hand and start working after licensure is obtained- since you said some people had jobs waiting soon after their gradn. In the present scenario we may need to go that extra mile to get a job.If any of you seniors start a thread dedicated to experiences and advice it will help and guide people graduating now.
