Just wondering if the recession nowadays is impacting the number of apps you're sending in or applying to.

I know getting a job is pretty hard nowadays and some of our parents might even have been laid off and hopefully not too many of our parents are going through foreclosures and stuff.

But I was just curious...

has affected me. I did meticulous research on every school before I applied.

I just read a newspaper article about the increase in graduate school applications. It mainly looked at non-professional graduate programs, but they're definitely up. I'd guess that Medical school numbers will be too, albeit less so, as you can apply for a master's in psych. without a whole bunch of prereqs. and AMCAS gymnastics, but that's not the case with medical school.

This horrible economy is definitely affecting me in this application process. I just finished a post-bacc in May, can't seem to lockdown a job w/o the place going into a hiring freeze, and even though she doesn't have the money, my mom has graciously offered to put my app fees on her credit card (despite major paycuts at work).

I really envy those applying who haven't really been impacted by the recession. Like dbrokut, I meticuously researched every school and don't have the liberty of adding more at this point. And not a day goes by where I'm not thinking of how much money this is costing, how many sacrifices we're making so that I can reach my goals, how much worse my credit might be after this process. I honestly think this whole application process needs to be re-evaluated...there's no logic for the average applicant to pay $3000-$5000 to apply - NONE.

while the number of applicants may increase slightly (but not much), i bet the number of schools per applicant will decrease (but probably not by much) so it all evens out in the end...

Can people still afford medical or graduate school these days?

if your credit is bad, you can't go to medical school.
if lenders won't let you take out loans, you can't be a student

There's always the military HPSP scholarship if you're willing to go to Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan after medical school.

Your credit would have to be HORRIBLE in order for you to not be able to qualify for a loan with a co-signer (which is what I anticipate doing anyways).

And TopSecret's right - there's the HSPS scholarship as well as the USHPS (public health service) scholarship that will fully fund your education in return for years of service...both of which I am currently considering.
