Hi all,

I am an IMG who did internship abroad and have gained general registration in Australia. Is it possible to get recognition of prior learning counted towards GP training in Australia?

For example, if after gaining general registration I did 6 months of medicine and 6 months of ED, would that count as one year of GP training (even if I wasn't signed up to the GP training scheme).

ACRRM awards more RPL than RACGP, and it's determined on a case-by-case basis. Generally speaking though, your PGY2 year should count towards the post-intern hospital year requirement assuming none of it is being used for Australian internship requirements. E.g., your 6mos of ED cannot count both as part of PGY2 and to fufill the college ED pre-requisite (though ED time above and beyond the required term can be cross-applied to count towards the paeds requirement, if you saw lots of kids).

My case: I had the hospital year count retrospectively for RACGP, then when the college didn't accept any of my subsequent locum time towards training, I switched to ACRRM which did.

At any rate, it's an easy matter to phone the colleges and ask for more detail, as requirements change subtlely all the time. They won't commit to your situation in particular but will give you a general idea.

There's also not much harm in applying for RPL to both colleges to get a definitive answer. Many people do this and then even join both, usually to drop one after a year of two of being a registrar (joining both used to be more common when the college entry was less competitive, but it still happens).

Thanks pittman. I assume any work for rpl would have to have been done after general registration to count towards training time?
