Recommendation from Research

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think you have to get it from someone who has taught you in a science class. That is what I have been told.

Nope it has to be a formal class for the 2 sci letters. Ive found a few schools who will allow that to count as a sci letter but they are very few an far between. Since everyone basically applies widely, you should get 2 sci letters from actual teachers.

which schools required 2 sciences over a committee letter anyway?

some schools like the UC schools for example do not have pre med advisory committees. So we are forced to get individual LORs in lieu of the committee letter. Usuauly they require 2 sci and 1 non-sci letter if your school has no committe.

If I get a LOR from a PI (neurobiology lab) does that count as part of the 2 science recommendations?

Most of the schools I applied to research mentors count as science letters. My pre-health office says the same thing and I know for a fact that is what people at the university of iowa said.

Don't get all worked up over meeting exact letter guidelines. As long as you are close, it's not that big of a deal.

My letters:
  1. Biochem prof
  2. Genetics PI
  3. Phil Prof
  4. Clinical Work Supervisor

Not my experience at all, actually the complete opposite.

you have to look at what each particular school wants and they are usually very specific. for example, some say they want letters from SCIENCE FACULTY - your neurobiology PI would count since he's faculty in a science field. However, some schools specifically state they want letters from faculty that taught you in a class and gave you a grade. your PI would not count in this regard.

most of the schools i looked at specifically state on their site it must be from actual formal classes. anyways like all med schools everything differs from school to school. To be safe it would be best to get actual letters that was my point. you could always call each school/email and ask them too. I did that for a lot of the schools i was interested in

I've looked at some secondaries, and I saw that a lot of schools just want committee letters, would it hurt to send in a committee letter +4/5 recommendations, or is this the norm?
