How long to recommenders usually take to write one? and about how much time should you give them to write it?

Realistically, you should ask your references to write 2 months ahead of time, and expect their references completed after around 4-5 weeks. I've had personal experience where references took much longer (6+ weeks), or even passed away! You want to allot enough time that you can plan for unexpected problems and still have time to secure another reference.

The best way is to approach the people you want and ask if you could ask them to write you a letter when the time comes and then give them a few weeks (at least 3) to write it and submit it. Sometimes they want to go over it with you and make sure they can say everything you want them to. If you are applying this application cycle, you should have asked them yesterday and I would recommend getting on it ASAP, but do not put them in a rush because that will change how they write your letter.

Give them at least a month. Better yet, ask them as early as possible. Remember, they're doing you a favor.
