Recommended GRE prep book

I'm considering taking the GRE to apply to a masters program(BU), what book would you recommend? Also what is the best way to build up vocabulary for the verbal?

I used Barron's "How to Prepare for the GRE Test with CD-ROM" and found it very useful especially with the mathematical concepts. They break down the different portions of the test and explain it concisely. It also contains a list of vocabulary most likely to appear on the GRE. Before I took it, I went to Amazon and searched for GRE books. I have discovered that the reviews they have on each book are usually objective by people trying to help other people. That's just my opinion. I checked out the book from the library though. Also, you should make sure you download the POWERPREP CD from the GRE website - that's essential. It contains 2 exams by ETS.

I second GRE Powerprep, and I also recommend the Princeton Review books.

The two books below are great. Crash Course is great if your time is limited. GRE Powerprep is the most important thing to do though. I found those books in my library.

It's tougher to find verbal prep for the GRE. most of the prep books emphasize math which is not so great if you have taken classes such as calculus and beyond. So I was planning to use the relevant parts of the SAT workbook.

What is the best way to prepare for verbal? Should I memorize a vocabulary list?
I am a bit weak in the vocabulary(at least I think I am).

I just learned the words I didn't know from the glossaries of the Kaplan and Princeton Review books. They have a list of the "most used" GRE vocab words.

If you're trying to ace the thing (1500+), you should get a copy of the GRE: Big Book....I know a lot of people who did nothing but work through all 27 tests, and aced (2200+) the old version.

I just looked for it at ebay and amazon. I couldn't find such that book. 😡

The book is out of publication, so finding copies isnt easy, but far from impossible. Go to ebay, search for "Gre Big Book" and check under completed listings--you will need to sign into ebay, and possibly pull the 'check completed listings' option from the search bar on the left. There were three books listed under completed auctions when I checked, ranging from $50-$76, and none of them had been sold. Contact the sellers through ebay and ask them if its still available. Most auctions had completed in the last two weeks and this book is relisted periodically.

If you want to do good on the gre do the following

buy princetons review book

by the excellent gre for dummies book this book is masterful

buy ets book

and do all the tests you can practice and do the test same test over again for example if you took a test on saturday take the same test again on sunday and again on monday. the test is really pyschological...taking the same test over again will expose the psychology like a dentist performin a root canal would expose the root of the tooth you will see the psychology....

I am using the Kaplan book now for my prep. Its not the book that you are purchasing as much it is the cd-rom. The book is worthless in my opinion, but the cd has been very helpful. They give you a lot of practice tests, lessons, and a few games for both verbal and math.

I don't have the GRE materials yet eventhough I ordered them 3 days ago. The questions are not directed at you specifically.
