Hello,
Long time reader, first time poster.
I was just wondering if someone had a list of "classic" journal articles for externships and residencies. I am a student at Barry and I've heard numerous times that we are weak with respect to journal articles. In order to avoid this stereotype, I would like to compile of list of about 25-50 articles so that my fellow students and I can leave a better impression.

Thanks in advance!👍

have you heard of all the trauma classifications? read the original articles. that is a start.

Here's a file I keep with stuff I've bought/will buy and read/will read... it's a few cut-n-pastes from posts I liked here on SDN and some titles that have been recommended to me by students/residents/attendings I respect. Some of these are just desk references or bookshelf dust collectors, but I may get to them during residency on my external rotations (yah right?).

"Required" reading for externships and interviews are:
x-Cali pocket guide of trauma classifications
x-Hershey Manual
x-Presby Manual
x-PI Manual
-Residency Review Manual
-Foot and Ankle Secrets (Harkless)

Articles
-any articles published by the programs you are attending
-original articles for the classifications:
Lauge Hansen - ankle fractures
Danis Weber - ankle fractures
Salter Harris - epiphyseal fractures
Berndt Hardy - talar dome fractures
Hawkins - talar neck fractures
Wagner - ulcer grades
U of T - ulcer grades
Charcot classifications (Eikenholtz)
Gustillo Anderson - open fractures)

J of Foot and Ankle Surgery is the best (most scientific) podiatry journal
JAPMA is alright. There aren't really any other scientific DPM journals.

But definitely read:
Foot and Ankle International (MD foot/ankle ortho journal)
Clinics in Pod Med and Surg
Diabetes Care
J Bone and Joint Surg (both US and Brit versions have good stuff)

_________

Anatomy:
x-Netter atlas
x-Thieme anatomy
x-Gray's Anatomy
x-McMinn's Foot and Ankle
x-The Extremities (Warfel)
-Draves (out of print... I can't find it anywhere?)

Lab coat pockets:
x-Pocket Podiatrics
x-PI manual
x-Tarscon Pocket Pharmacopoeia
x-Maxwell pocket medicine

Podiatry:
General Podiatric Texts:
x-Principles and Practice of Podiatric Medicine
x-Hershey Manual
x-Presby Manual

-Residency Review Manual
-Foot and Ankle Secrets (Harkless) – 2nd Ed?

Surgery:
x-McGlamry's Foot and Ankle Surgery
x-PI Internal Fixation Workbook
x-Orthopaedic Pocket Procedure : Foot and Ankle

Wound Care:
x-Clinical Care of the Diabetic Foot (Armstrong)
x-Handbook of Lower Extremity Infections (Joseph)
x-Chronic Wound Care (Krasner)

Biomechanics:
x-Clinical Biomechanics of the Lower Extremity (Valmassy)

General Medicine:
Medicine:
x-StepUp to Medicine
x-Harrison's Manual
x-Washington Manual
x-Tarascon Internal Medicine Pocketbook
x-Current Essentials of Emergency Medicine (Stone)

Surgery:
x-Pocket Surgery (Wrightston)
-Surgical Recall (Blackbourne)
-Essentials of Surgical Specialties (Lawrence)
x-Essentials of Surgery (Becker)

Leisure Reading:
x-House of God (Shem)
x- Tarascon How to be a Truly Excellent JMS

...There, now you know what I know or more (provided you want to spend a ton of $ on books and will do the work to read them). I'd say that the Armstrong diabetes book, PI manual, and just current and classic literature is the best so far. I'm not very deep into McGlamry's yet, but it's great too.

There are big expensive surgery textbooks like Chang or Meyerson, but I just don't have the cash right now. Maybe later on once I read most of what I have already...

Wow.😱
Thanks a lot Feli and Krabmas. I really appreciate it. I'll start looking immediately.

Coughlin and McMann is really good for learning how to do procedures and has great pictures for foot and ankle surgery. It is like $400 for 2 volumes.

Another great book to read in your spare time (yeah I know its nonexistent) is one that Dr Mandracchia recommended to me when I was a 3rd year student. It is called "hot lights cold steel, life death and sleepless nights in a surgeons first years". I can't say enough about how great the book is. You can check out some good excerpts here http://books.google.com/books?id=ko...hts+cold+steel&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title#PPP1,M1

For Anatomy, I would also add:
- Anatomy of the Foot and Ankle: Descriptive, Topographic, Functional (Shahan K. Sarrafian) Great book to have but this book is out of print.

For Biomechanics, I would also add:
- Foot Function: A Programmed Text (Michael Seibel)
- Biomechanical Examination of the Foot (Root, Weed, Orien, Hughes) This book is out of print and many of the original foot biomechanics are based out of this book. However, there are some literature out there that are showing some of the biomechanical concepts in this 2-volume book may be faulty.

For Podiatric Surgery, I would also add:
- Textbook of Bunion Surgery (Gerbert)

For Journals, I would also add:
Journal of Orthopedic Trauma
Foot and Ankle Clinics
Techniques of Foot and Ankle Surgery

For short foot and ankle surgery review text, I would recommend the following:
- Lippincott Orthopaedic Surgery Essential Series: Foot and Ankle (David Thordarson)
- Elsevier Current Knowledge in Orthopaedic Surgery Series: Foot and Ankle (C. DiGiovanni and J. Greisberg)
- AAOS Orthopedic Knowledge Update: Foot and Ankle 3
The first two books were written for orthopedic residents getting ready to do their foot and ankle rotations. The last book was written for orthopedic surgeons to update their knowledge in foot and ankle surgery. These books give a quick review of various topics without going into too much depth in any topics.

For foot and ankle radiology, I would recommend the following:
- Foot and Ankle Radiology (Robert Christman)
- Orthopedic Imaging (Greenspan)

I think it's safe to say that all of these texts are great resources, and nobody will argue that they are expensive. Is there any way of finding out when the next edition of some of these texts will be published? I ask because I am looking into buying McGlarmy's, but the latest edition was released in 2001. Should I wait to make my purchase until the next version comes out? I would hate to buy the 3rd, if the 4th is right around the corner. Thanks in advance.
