Hey all,
I remember reading recently about a bunch of books that different people had recommended for those looking at medicine as a career. Where is the thread? And if it doesn't exist anymore- then any books to advise a book worm to read concerning medicine?
Thanks a bunch,
Lindsay🙂

Well, I'm not sure if this would really count but..

Try "People of the Lie" by Dr. Scott Peck. An interesting read about Peck's work as a psychiatrist as he tries to define something that isn't defined by medicine.. EVIL. It really is quite interesting and definately shows the delicacy of the human mind and work people have to do to patch it back together, and more often than not, fail at it.

But if you're really interested in medicine, the best way to find a doctor that'll let you shadow him or her or do clinical research. Nothing beats an introduction to medicine like being thrown into the lions den.

I really liked "when the air hits your brain"

a book about a neurosurg resident....awsome book. uplifting but not on purpose. wild stuff in there.
title comes from neuro resident cynicism

"you ain't never the same, once the air hits your brain (neurosurgery preformed)"

I would recommend "Waking Up in America" by Dr. Pedro Jose Greer, Jr.

It is such an inspiring and powerful book on this physician and his work with the poor and homeless in Florida (he was even showcased on Dateline NBC a few times)!!!

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down - good read, sad story, eye opener to the cross-cultural barriers in medicine

I am currently reading that book and love it.

Gifted Hands by Ben Carson - great autobiography of a black man who became a leading neurosurgeon despite many hardships. very inspiring, higly recommended.

Hi,

All great recommendations so far, and I have a couple that I've read through the years:

Although they might be a little dated, the Marion books are always a decent read - "Intern Blues" and "Learning to play God" the second book I think is the better one, since I'm a little into Peds but both are fairly good. "MD's talk about themselves" sounds like a stupid title for a book, but its pretty good, as it gives the opinions of several docs in training and out in the real world. "The Blood of Strangers" has a lot of great stories about an ED in New Mexico and you can cover it in a couple of days.

Probably the best book I've read so far is "A measure of my Days: The Journal of a Country Doctor" by David Loxtercamp, M.D. where he tells the various stories of his patients in a small N. England town and how he becomes involved in their lives. A great book, although a little on the religious side for a chapter or two, Loxtercamp delivers a decent story that gives some insight into the doctor-patient relationship. Hope that helps 🙂

"The House of God" by Samuel Shem

It's a very good book and anyone who is thinking about medicine should read.

Hey--
thanks a lot everybody:clap: -my library had a ton of them-so I'll be busy for awhile🙄
