Hi, I'm researching AEGD/GPR programs and was wondering if there are some that are highly recommended and/or strongly discouraged. Any feedback from current or past residents of any VA residency programs would be helpful. Thanks!

Here are the few I know about:

-Palo Alto, CA (GPR)
-San Francisco, CA (GPR)
-Long Beach, CA (GPR)

They are all extremely competitive, for a good reason.

From what I hear, you have a pretty good shot of getting a solid experience at almost any VA program since there are almost no financial limitations to your treatment plans (fixed, endo, implants - ok, ok, OK).

Are they looking for all the usual stuff? Score on Pt I that starts with a nine? Good rank/GPA, research, volunteer, etc. Or is there some other angle when applying for a GPR? Thanks, Nile.

I really do not know what it takes to get in these programs (or what they're looking for), but I can give you a good idea of what to expect once you're there. I doubt that GPR programs would be interested in research though, but I may be wrong.
I know a couple of pretty solid applicants from last year whom DID NOT match. They both said they really liked those programs and ranked them highest (one interviewed Palo Alto and SF and the other interviewed at Palo Alto and Long Beach).
I wish I could have been of more help Soflex.

Good Luck.

The one in San Antonio is quite good. It is a VA affiliated AEGD and those residents to a ton of implants, third molars, orthodontic cases, etc. I would highly recommend it.
