hey guys,

my college uses gmail (.edu account). i accidentally deleted an important e-mail from a professor. unfortunately, i received this e-mail around 8 months ago. is there any way that this e-mail can be retrieved? do colleges save e-mails to the system, even if they have been deleted by the user? if so, how long would these e-mails remain in the college's system? i'm asking because maybe the college can recover the e-mail for me? as i said before, it's been 8 months since the e-mails been received, so i wouldn't be surprised if the e-mails from last year been wiped to clear storage.

thanks in advance guys!!

edit: it's not in my trash, it's been deleted from there as i explained in post #3

Did you just delete it? It's in your trash bin.

i accidentally cleared all my deleted items, as i hadn't cleared it for a while and wanted to clean up. then i looked in my inbox and saw that i accidentally deleted the email from the professor, and it was gone from the trash with all my other items...silly mistake

if it's gone, it's gone. it's not a huge deal i guess, i just need some clarification

It is probably gone forever.

However, you might be able to check your sent file and click on your message and see if you can click on something about receiving a reply. I use outlook for my school stuff and we can see the message log and recover messages even after deleting them.

On a side note, I don't really think this is the right place to ask this question.

I say they probably have no ability to recover the email. You could always ask the professor to resend the email if they still have it.

Since it's powered by gmail I doubt ur uni's it center has any access to your emails at all. It's 8 months old just tell the prof u can't find it and have him resend, it might be in his sent folder still.

The more technical explanation. Your account space is on some server someplace in the world. The way most filesystems work once a file is deleted permanently that memory address is marked as a 'usable empty space'. So if you had cleared it a day ago and and no new files had been created you probably could have retrieved it. BUT, because it has been 8 months some other file now resides at the same memory address.

Short answer : Nope you cant retrieve it. Your college cant do anything at this point. Also, people working for college IT support NOT the brightest people 🙂

ohhhh okay. yeah i didn't think that the college had room to store e-mails 8 months old....

yeah i know google can't retrieve it, but i was wondering if a college's IT department saves all e-mails and i could retrieve it from the IT guys?

I will make the other posts clear for you: "No. You are SOL."

What I'm trying to say is that you university has outsourced email to Gmail, so their help department is the one you'd have to deal with. The local IT department likely has nothing to do with your email besides sending a check to Google

The only way you'll find out is to ask them. With data retention laws being what they are many places keep backups of even deleted emails but I'd be very surprised if they went through a bunch of trouble to restore one email at the request of a student.

Ya I doubt google ever "deleted" your email...it probably still exists archived on one of their servers. Although your chances of them retrieving it for you are slim to none.

I recently read that google permanently saves every search done by every user. Chances are they don't delete anything.
