I was told by my advisor that he had a student that was accepted into an MD program and subsequently got recruited for that schools MD/PHD program. I had never heard of this before and I am wondering if there is any truth to this. Has anyone heard of this happening? Or was I misinformed?

"recruiting" is a very loose word. It could mean anything from: 1. he met a professor who liked him and wanted him as a grad student 2. he approached someone who thought he'd make an ok grad student 3. an admissions officer magically stumbled upon his awesomeness and lobbied him for the grad program 4. he got funding from somewhere and the grad school was willing to take him... etc.

you can enter a MD/PhD program later once you start the MD-only program, although the full funding (full tuition + stipend for MD and PhD years) most often is not provided (the school most likely will only cover PhD tuition/stipend)
