I own the Lowinson, and it is indeed "comprehensive". Like most multi-author compendium-style textbooks, the chapters can vary widely. If you're interested in addiction, it's probably a must-have.

I read this little baby (below) in prep for my addiction boards, and I found it quite readable, concise, and helpful. Then I lent it to a resident, and never saw it again... 🙁 You might want to check into it.
