Sometimes when using the direct ophthalmoscope, i get a large reflection on the patients pupil that restricts my viewing the retina. Is there something i'm doing wrong, or are there any tips to remedy this?

you will get glare when attempting to view through a pupil that is smaller than the spot size of your ophthalmoscope light. on most ophthalmoscopes there are at least 3 spot size settings.

if you haven't done so already, you should examine a patient with dilated pupils to see what the enormous difference in ease of viewing is. viewing with a direct at undilated pupils is much harder.
