Hey all, how would you rate these PsyD programs?
Indiana State University
Loyola University Maryland
Virginia Consortium Program

I got an interview offer from these schools and the days are overlapping.
I can make 2 decisions. If you know anything about those programs, please inform me. They all seem to be great programs with pretty balanced research and clinical training. Any difference that they might have?
Thanks,

I got an invite to their PsyD program, but declined it after learning that my POI was no longer in the Psychology Department. My take on some program points (depending on your situation, these could be good, bad, or neutral):

1) Good program, rigorous
2) VERY stingy on transfer of prior graduate coursework
3) Long mean time to completion
4) PhD in PsyD clothing

My dissertation advisor received her PsyD from Indiana State. She spoke highly of it in terms of clinical training, but acknowledged a some lacking areas in terms of research training. She obtained a master's in biostatistics and took the initiative to pursue few research activities on her own, but is now the PI of her own lab with 2 large, NIH funded studies. So I'd say it all worked out. I have no info/insights on the other two.

That's the whole thing, I really think having a research based Masters can give a person an edge over students who just take the BA to PSY.D route. I feel it's helped me tremendously. Good observation there.

ISU: Good clinical training, though N=1, so take with a grain of salt.
Loyola: I thought their program was pretty good. I can't remember if they were fully-funded, but it made my short-list of university based Psy.D. programs.
VC: I believe they dropped the Psy.D. in favor of a Ph.D. If you do a search on here you'll see a thread or two that talks about the transition.

I am in this exact same position! Any more input (especially people with personal experience with the program) is greatly appreciated. I was really looking forward to attending all 3 interviews to get a better "feel" for each program and am kind of bummed that I can only pick 2! I'm also open to hear from people who have interviewed at these places in previous years! Thanks!!!

Hey thanks for the input! What's N=1? Also, I think the VC is keeping their PsyD.
Hopefulhokie, I actually found out that you can attend the Indiana State on different days. You can pick from Feb 17, 21, 24, 28. Lots of days, huh? But only for like 2 hours... Better than nothing I guess.

Yeah, I guess that's better than nothing I guess! Are you planning on attending on one of those alternate days?? N=1 means he only represents a sample size of one person, so take it with a grain of salt! I'm going to PM you

Thanks,

Indiana State is supposed to be pretty good, as far as PsyD programs go. I considered it but didn't want to live in Terre Haute, and Indy is too long of a commute.

The VC program is a great program. Apparently wonderful training opportunities. However, if you look at their page, funding has decreased significantly which may deter applicants. I also believe they have changed from a 3+1 program to a 4+1 program (4 years of coursework/training + 1 year of internship). I would definitely bring up the funding issue when interviewing here.

I am currently a PsyD Student at Indiana State. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about the program, living in Terre Haute, commutting from Indy, etc. I'll be happy to answer to the best of my ability 🙂
