Stuff I've observed from the interview trail...

Boston:

Bostonians are serious about their Dunkin' Donuts (there was one on every street corner in downtown boston!).

Harvard and MIT are actually on separate planets that happen to both be called Massachusettes.

Never, never, never call Boston 'Beantown' when you're there.

Michigan chicks are all flat, brunette, and ugly.

Dunkin Donuts isn't just a Boston thing!!! Dunkin Donuts rules the northeast!!!! (I should know I'm from NJ originally!) And thanks heavens they just put one down here in the sunshine state ten minutes away from me!!!

So true! If you see a student in the 12 items or less express line at the Stop and Shop in Cambridge is it... a) An MIT student who can't read or b) a Harvard student who can't count? No offense meant to either school!

Most people I know seem to be more obsessed with Dunkin Donuts coffee than their donuts. There is a store on every corner it seems sometimes.

Dunkin Donuts has the best coffee hands down. Krispy Kreme has decent donuts but they are too sweet in my opinion and their coffee sucks.

The main reason Dunkins kicks Starbucks' ass is that their prices are reasonable. If I drank 'Bucks everyday instead of Dunkins, I would be wicked strapped for cash.

Yes, price is a huge selling point (pun intended). But I think DD's coffee tastes better too.

I love my dunkin donuts! It's so nice to know you only have to walk 5 minutes at most to get your caffeine fix. If only they had better ambiance I'd never go to Starbucks (evil!).

Oh, and the difference between MIT and Harvard students is that MIT kids show how smart they are by inventing and discovering cool stuff whereas harvard students do it by mentioning they go to Harvard every 2 seconds (a conclusion based on 5 years of non-biased observation).

I have yet to meet a HArvard student/grad who hasnt found some way to work it into the conversation that they went to Harvard. I find it kinda funny.....

haha
im curious now, to see what all your new yawk stereotypes are!

 Hee heee...thats the other thing....Dont people on the east coast know what an "r" is! I sat next to a Boston lady on a plane trip and she kept saying"bahn" it took me a while to relaize she was saying "barn"

what about Krispy Kreme?

that hurts me... but you're pretty much right, so i can't argue or get pissed!

this is incredibly obvious, but everyone in LA is "in the business" one way or another... everyone!

Krispy Kremes are a recent addition to Boston...I can honestly say I've never been to one. I know there's one in Prudential...and maybe one in Medford...but there are NONE out here in the sticks of Western Mass that's for sure.

New Jersey:

Everyone and their f#$%ing mother drives a VW.

Newark is universally revered as the armpit of the Northeast

Everyone watches the Sopranos

People from NJ don't care where you're from, just why you're here

Virginia and North Carolina:

Way too many people smoke. Even the non-smoking hotel rooms stink like cigarettes. And what's the deal with smoking in the hotel lobby?

i dont know about ppl from NJ driving a VW.. they def drive camaros though
and they watch sopranos bc that show rocks
no one has love for the durty jerz these days 🙁 not that i am defending their B&T asses

If you ask for directions in Philadelphia, it will always involve a turn at the wawa. Unfortunately, no one in philadelphia realizes that there is a Wawa on every corner.

Wawa has the best coffee, too bad its regional.

I think Providence wins the Dunkin Donuts contest. They actually have an arena called the "Dunkin Donuts Center." mmm...I do miss their hazelnut coffee.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing about Dunkin Donuts when I was there yesterday. There was one around the corner from where I was from and I had donuts before I boarded at Logan, since there was one there too. They do have good coffee though. I bought two pounds for 10.99 during their special promotion. Brewing a cup as we speak, ahh.

But I must say, Boston has some of the best looking women I have seen in all my interviews. At BU, there were a lot of interviewees from the Boston schools (250K college students there, not too surprised to see a bunch of interviewing) and they were all very attractive. Even the finanicial aid rep was hot.

I definitely agree with this - based on 1 year unbiased observation and 4 years biased observation.

HAHAHA. In all honesty, though, some of the brightest and most creative "writers" I've met have gone to MIT. However, most MIT students/grads decide to go into a field that doesn't give them a chance to showcase their writing ability (other than in scientific journals).

hahaha, i'll try to keep that in mind in the future...
also wawa beats all these other places on soooo many levels

as a former student at phillips academy, i can also say with utmost confidence that harvard is a complete disaster when it comes to employing favoritism to recruiting. i mean, no one else does it quite like they do. i was told i was in even before the notification date for early decision (maybe the coach who was interested in me put in a good word, but i felt like i wasn't such a stellar candidate that i deserved it so easily). i wonder how tough it must really be to get in without connections since they fill up so many spots just through networks that the students have.

Sheetz is so much better than Wawa it's ridiculous. I think it is a regional thing though - from one of the Carolinas to Pennsylvania.

I am from CT and I am well aware of what an "R" is. That is just a really heavy Boston accent. Anyone outside of Boston should be pronouncing the "R" just fine.

Richmond, VA - Philip Morris Headquarters. The cigarettes are usually under $3 a pack (they are about $6 up in CT).

This is true- I grew up 20 minutes Northwest of Boston and no one has the R-less accent. Although early exposure to Boston allows better accent recognition.

Long live Dunkin' Donuts- I gotta say, I miss my DD fix down here in VA

Here are my contributions to the Regional Stereotypes:

Everyone in Colorado has skiied or snowboarded within the week. Everyone in Boulder smokes pot. Practically no one grew up here, and everyone who did resents those that didn't. If you're here 5 years, you're practically a native.

And one of the grocery store chains in Colorado is called King Soopers. Isn't that a silly name?

Rhode Island has the most Dunkin Donuts/sq. mi. of any other state, from what I hear. In fact, the concentration of DD stores in RI is borderline ridiculous--they're practically across the street from each other. BTW, you won't meet a single person from RI who isn't hoplessly addicted to DD, even though I live in NYC now, I still bring bags of DD coffee from home to maintain my fix.

what is up w you DD ppls?? krispy kremes is where its att!!!

sweet n sour like a tangerine
fresh like a box of krispy kremes!!

actually idont eat donuts so i wouldnt know, but they are still better!

im w you UCLA, B&T'ers dont get love from me either (unless a few amigos)
cuz you know taking your shirt off and waving it over your head at webster hall (gag me ) is realllly hot

Krispy Kreme is heaven heaven heaven heaven. 😍 love their coffee, love their donuts (but only if they're hot). DD has good coffee but I'm not a donut fan.

However, my folks lived in Philadelphia for a few years and I really really miss Wawa. Mmmm...Wawa sandwiches. *drool*

This makes me think of the interesting studies they have done showing people's brand loyalty. It boggles my mind that people incorporate brands into their own identity, even though I know I fall prey to it too.

it means "Bridge & Tunnel"

ie NJ peeps who cross over to manhattan in swarms via tunnels (lincoln, holland, etc) or bridges (GW, etc)

No, people that went to Harvard just say "I went to school in Boston" like its the only school there. I can usually tell that's what they mean. One day, I'm going to ask, "Oh, so you went to UMass?"

Thanks. That's funny, I've lived in north NJ for 4 years and I never heard that term. Maybe because I worked in Jersey too and only crossed into NY for recreational purposes.

Iowa:

White men can't dance. White men ESPECIALLY shouldn't try to do a dance-off/"You've been served" up on the dance floor. Just, no. 👎

There's no such thing as non-smoking.

Iowans love to impress you with how cold it was last night compared to wherever you're from (CA in my case).

Iowans love to tell you that its unseasonably warm and if you think its cold now...

Yes, its all about corn fields and corn growing products--just watch TV.

north jersey is really nice- were you in bergen county? i lived in bergen county for one summer when i was interning at Wyeth (in pearl river, ny) but shh! B&T is a slightly derrogatory term used by us stuck up manhattanites to describe jersey people so it makes sense you havent heard it while living in jersey. i only mean it in jest bc i have some beautiful friends from nj 😉

NY for "recreational purposes?" hehehe i just had a really hilarious/cute image in my mind 😉

Yes, I did live in Bergen County after college. Englewood, to be precise. Bergen County is great! I won't tell your secret. Besides NJ residents have a sense of humor about themselves....

Coincidentally I also worked in Pearl River but at an ad agency.
