hey guys i just registered my amcas profile and started to fill out basic information for the app. but obviously, I will not be matriculating for 3 years.

will i have to restart my profile and app every year?

PS- I am just registering now to check out how the app actually looks and what not.

thanks, be harsh if you want to be, i feel stupid even asking lol

I'm actually curious about the AMCAS app too and now that the OP has given me the idea, I just might register to see what it looks like. I would like the answers to these questions also.

It's just your basic information, transcript, activities, and personal statement. They aren't asking you to unify the physical forces or anything. AMCAS opens a month before you can submit it, and if you can't at least complete the non-creative portions (i.e. everything but the personal statement) in a month, you should seriously reconsider the career path you're about to try to embark on.

The reason that the OP says he won't matriculate for three years is likely because he's a freshman and just wants to see what the app looks like. He doesn't mean it'll take him three years to fill out AMCAS itself.

It saves your information over the years. I didn't have to enter previous coursework or schools attended, thank god. I had to send transcripts again, though...

Yes, thank you for that. I'm saying that there's no reason to be worrying about AMCAS right now. However, you will note that he said he'd started filling out his information which will not do a lot of good since they scrap all the applications each year. edit: You learn something every day, I suppose.

It's a waste of your time to fill it out, except maybe for satisfying your curiosity a little bit. It's my understanding that all applications that aren't actually submitted get deleted every year. If you do apply, it will be saved in case you don't get in and need it again the next year, but you're not at that stage of the game yet.

ok now I'm confused over the conflicting replies... does it keep your information if you enter it now and are not actually applying this year or not?

edit: nvm druggernaut answered it.

ya, i know that i am not going to apply to med school yet, i was just wondering if the amcas saves your info over the years until you actually submit or do I need to update it again once i ACTUALLY apply. sorry for any confusion

What's it matter? There is absolutely no need to even know what it looks like right now. It would be an absolute waste of time to fill it out or look at it years in advance.

Seriously, there is more to life than applying to medical school. Go play Xbox or something.

its not that big of a waste of time, considering i have the free time right now, what else am i going to be doing at 6 30 on a monday night? classes start in a week, this is the only time i will have to myself for awhile, but ya... thanks guys.

i am playing xbox btw lol 🙂 and watching the giants/panthers game, go eli!

Go play Xbox or something.
Or drink or prank your RA or ANYTHING other than looking at a form that is totally self-explanatory and won't matter for 3 years.

On the other hand, you'll be way better prepared for the application process than your peers. While you're on this preparation kick, you might want to stop by the school secondaries thread (found here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=625377) and crank out a few drafts for the schools that have prompts listed. Then you'll be all set up for application and will just have to send in some cash to complete the process. Of course, it goes without saying that you should get a jump on your personal statement now, too.

It does NOT save your information if you do not reapply the following year. It only saves your information for the NEXT cycle, that's it.

thanks milkman, i live at home so maybe my dad will get pranked haha.

but ya i definitely will take that second part of your post to heart, I am just trying to stay on the ball in my off time.

btw, ill just wait till my matriculation year. but I will be constantly working on my PS.

actually I did that already... I applied to BA/MD programs in high school and I wanted to see if I could reuse my essays lol.

You can sign up for an AAMC account, get an ID number, view this year's AMCAS, fill it out if you want, etc.

If you don't actually SUBMIT the application this year, the info you entered will not be saved for upcoming years. If you really have nothing better to do...sure, fill it out if you want. It's kind of a huge hassle so I don't recommend it though.

If you fill out the application and SUBMIT it, then end up not getting into med school and need to reapply in the future, the website saves your data so you don't have to re-enter it. Once you submit AMCAS once, you'll be considered a re-applicant in future years, so don't hit the submit button just to satisfy your curiosity, haha...

For the record, I actually did make an account and look at the AMCAS application for the cycle before the year I was applying. I too was curious what it entailed. But this was like... March or April before AMCAS opened in May. Not 2 years in advance.

I'm afraid you may have slightly misunderstood Al's sarcasm.

For God's sake, don't start any essays right now. Not only will they likely have changed by the time you apply, but YOU will likely have changed. You're not gaining anything from starting stuff this early and are just wasting time and making your future essays worse in the process.

ha, perhaps u missed my sarcasm, sorry if its not as obvious as milkmans. i will fill my free time with constant binge drinking, halo wars, and beefing up my fantasy football team... 😉
