During 3rd year rotations, I decided to only use review books for rotations. And if I enjoyed a rotation, I decided to get a textbook for specifically that rotation only. I realized I enjoyed psych halfway through, and never bothered to use a textbook. So I essentially used review books during entire 3rd year rotations.

Really regretting it now! For those interested in psych, what books did you use during 3rd year? I'm looking for something to read in my spare time. Or would I be better off concentrating on something else to read?

Thanks!

My school used Andreasen & Black's Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry. I thought it was pretty good, covered the basics well enough. I don't know how it works as leisure reading material though...

Saddock and Saddock Synopsis of Psychiatry is pretty popular. THey also have an even shorter Concise Textbook.

I know you liked Kaplan and Sadock MOM. The problem I had with the book is no K&S book left me feeling satisfied. The concise book was too concise, the bigger books were too big. I guess different personalities find different things appealing.

If you want sample questions, forget K&S. None of their questions are board style, and of the questions in that book, several of them are the type of question you'd get wrong, not becuase you don't know the material, but because the questions are poorly worded.

My own favorite books were the MGH Board prep book, and if that didn't work, or I needed more info, the K&S comprehensive book. The latter book is very very very comprehensive, but IMHO should occasionally be reviewed because on occasion, you will want to read the utmost comprehensive source. It is not practical to use it everyday, but yes, definitely if you have the time and a strange case that warrants a very deep examination.
