This is a really specific question, but has anyone had any luck getting reimbursed for third-party educational materials? I'm considering buying an Amboss subscription.

Don't know about HPSP, but when I was active duty the Navy set me out for a full-time outservice (FTOS) fellowship. the Navy would ONLY pay for things that were specifically required by my program.

I assume it's the same set of rules for HPSP. Required textbook? Check. Amboss subscription your school doesn't require (in writing)? Likely not.

However.

There are sometimes ways to game the system a little, though. For example - my fellowship program REQUIRED us to attend the subspecialty meeting to present our research. The program gave all fellows an education fund that was sized to cover travel & hotel, plus a small bit more. Most of my civilian co-fellows used that education fund to pay for the travel and hotel to the meeting. Because the trip was required by the program, I paid out of pocket, and then the Navy reimbursed me for it. This left me free to use my fellowship-provided education fund for other things.
