Hi everyone,
I recently graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.S in Computer Science (one transfer credit from Columbia University). Unfortunately, many of the very theoretical CS courses resulted in C's and I graduated with a 2.91 GPA. Since graduating I've been working as a software engineer in Chicago. I had always wanted to do Medicine, and did years of cancer research at Columbia in High School (my mother was a Pediatric HemOnc Fellow there and is now an attending at Cornell) . I know that high school years may not count but I did signficant research and ended up presenting a poster at the NY Science and Engineering Fair). I've also done a lot of volunteering in India for kids with Hemophilia.
Anyways, I switched from pre-med to CS half way through college, because I got entranced with tech and coding and algorithms, and while I enjoyed learning CS, my desire to be a doctor never faded. However, CS along with UChicago's grade deflation and a lack of attention on my part, ended with me obtaining a 2.91 GPA.
My plan now consists of quitting my job as a software engineer, doing 1.5-2 years of a DIY post-bacc and hopefully bringing my GPA up to a 3.1-3.2, and then applying to either Rosalind Franklin's BMS or Loyola's MAMS (both SMP's) and then finally applying to medical school.
I really want to stay near or in Chicago for med school for personal reasons. I wanted to ask if anyone had any advice or suggestions for the plan that I have laid out for myself and I'm really nervous and scared that I have royally screwed up my chance of med school. I really appreciate everyone on here's help and support. Thanks!!
