Given NYU’s meteoric rise in the past few years, would this school still be classified as a school for applicants that were able to successfully reinvent themselves? If so, what would be a good reinvented cGPA to target assuming 3.7+ postbac: 3.4,3.5?

Possibly, but a lot of T5/10 schools have very tight GPA margins (e.g. 3.8's might be the very bottom of the class)

No, this is actually pertaining to my application. I have a 3.4 cGPA with a 3.7+ postbac (4.0 last 30 credits in all science) and will be applying as disadvantaged (homelessness, etc). I want to apply to NYU for many reasons ( Bellevue, medical ethics, research,etc). I also want to be in NYC as most of my family is there.
is it unreasonable to apply given this profile?

There's no way to know other than by applying and seeing what happens. Their published stats indicate that you would be an outlier, but you already know that.

You have strong reasons for wanting to be there, and clearly have a lot to offer. If their statistical screens are too high given their newfound hyper-elite status, it is what it is.

I'm sure no one from the school would actually discourage you from applying, given how en vogue holistic reviews are, and all anyone on SDN can do is look at published stats and tell you it's a long shot, given a 3.95 median GPA and a 3.81 10%-ile. As you know, you will absolutely miss all the shots you don't take. Good luck!!!

I appreciate your feedback! Would an LOR from a current faculty member and a publication from an NYU med lab carry any weight as well in this circumstance; I was fortunate enough to have that experience.

Of course they would. So would the bad grades being very old while the good grades are more recent. Again, the question is whether this would be enough mitigation for a T5 school with a 3.95 median. And the answer is that no one here can know one way or the other, no matter how authoritative they sound.

Their published stats say "no," but we are not on the inside and cannot definitively answer you. All we know is that around 10 people in their class have GPAs below 3.81. We don't know how low they go, nor how low they would go to bring someone like you into their class. You have to apply to find out.

It looks like you have what it takes to have a very successful cycle. Maybe not T10 successful, but, then again, that applies to just about all of us! 🙂

Go for it. You have obviously done your homework about NYU and being a local, too, and an unusual applicant will have some appeal, I think.

Sorry for giving that impression. I was only concerned because I have seen NYU on the list of schools that reward reinvention ( one of Goro's posts lists NYU). I wasn't sure if they have strict cGPA restrictions despite everything else in my app.

Few schools have "strict" GPAs cutoffs, and they are relatively low for most that do (3.0-3.2 is typical). That's why we go by MSAR -- it tells us where the successful applicants and matriculants actually are.

You happened to pick one of the schools at the very top in terms of stats. This doesn't mean that no one with your profile goes there. It just means we don't see it in published stats with broad ranges (10%-ile, etc.) instead of actual numbers.

NYU is not in the same league as the reinvention schools @Goro typically talks about. Free tuition for all and a T5-10 ranking will tend to have that effect. This doesn't mean they won't be interested in you, but, no, it's not like Georgetown or @Goro's DO school, actively seeking out comeback stories. That's why you don't see it on reinvention lists. Nowadays, it's more likely to be on a list of schools pulling full pay students away from Harvard, Hopkins, Penn, Columbia, etc. 🙂

If you have access to MSAR, you can fact-check me. But I think since NYU implemented their free-tuition program, the % of students who identify as disadvantaged plummeted from >20% to like 10-15%. If you are low-income, many other top schools have better financial aid programs & are much more forgiving in terms of GPA/MCAT.

As NYU is one of the stats who...um, sex worker schools, go for it.
