I just interviewed at my top choice and I'm currently stressing, playing the waiting game. I was just wondering, how often do people get rejected after they interview. Also, those who were unfortunately rejected after their interview, how many of you thought it went well? Were you aware of something you said/did wrong? I'm wondering if anyone on here had an interview they thought went well and then got rejected.

You know, just to calm me down while I wait... 😛

Unfortunately anything can happen in the crazy game that is vet school admissions.

Try not to overanalyze everything now. It's out of your hands and hopefully you feel like you did the best that you could. Sometimes you're up against amazing applicants and even though you didn't mess anything up they go with someone else. Sometimes they base their decision on how well they think you'll fit with the rest of the people they've admitted. You just can't know how it will go. Plenty of people have what they consider to be bad interviews and end up getting accepted. and the reverse happens too. Just try to relax and see how the cards fall.

Not getting accepted the first, second, or third time (or more) is not the end of the world, although I think it's hard to remember that sometimes, and of course it's easier to say that from the other side of things.

but relax. it will be okay. no matter what happens.

👍

Somewhere back there, there's monkeys throwing darts at all our applications to help make decisions. Welcome to the party.

this! Unfortunately, there is absolutely NO way that we can predict our chances of getting in. I'm sure any number of people can give anecdotes on awful interviews that equaled acceptances or great interviews that ended up in nothing.

The waiting is AWFUL - I completely understand but there is absolutely nothing you can do but prepare well for you interview and then cross your fingers and wish that the stomach ulcers would GO AWAY. 😉

It can depend on the school and their process too. I got rejected after my interview at AVC last year, because it's only after the interview that they look at experience, and my experience didn't measure up to the other candidates they interviewed.

Coquette, you just made my day a lot better. I didn't realize they looked at experience after the interview; I've always felt that my experience category is my strongest! That makes me feel a little better.

Kodabear, schools always interview more candidates than spots they have to offer, so there is always someone out there who interviews and is then rejected. As everyone mentioned, it's really out of your hands at this point. Be confident with the fact that you did your best and cross your fingers!

It's a crap-shoot. Three years ago I interviewed at my IS.... was so excited about the interview.... everything went well... I was on cloud 9 when I left.

Rejected.

Was told on my exit interview that, even though my interview was one of the best they had scored that year.... my GRE/GPA was too low to bump me into the "accepted" group.

Frustrating... yes. Don't give up hope... if it's something you really want to pursue.... are ambitious to do everything you can to improve and keep throwing yourself before the ADCOM, you'll get in. I'm proof of that. It may take time (this is my 3rd application cycle).... but it's worth it!

Well after a totally crap-tacular morning, I'm glad I made someone's day brighter! 😛

I am personally in the same boat (I think). My strengths are my experiences, my references, my leadership and my diversity. My GPA is okay I guess (I didn't take school seriously for a while but then busted ass and greatly improved) and my GRE is, well, it sure was some numbers. I interview very well (judging on past experiences) but I am worried I still may be rejected after my interview based on my GPA/GRE.

This doesn't make any sense to me because isn't them offering you an interview pretty much an acknowledgment that you are qualified on paper? They already know your GPA/GRE so why would they even invite you to an interview if they know those scores will not qualify you?

I have interviewed at two places and hear back from both of them next week. I am so nervous and I keep kicking myself over my low stats.

I'm applying to the same school and have amazing experience. If my grades don't cut it, they won't even look at that.

So it can go both ways.

My understanding is that if you're invited to an interview, they think you can handle the workload. The problem is that they have twice as many candidates as seats, all of whom can handle the workload. So if lots of high GPA/GRE people interview well, then they're given first dibs. I know it sucks, but the schools would be stupid to only interview as many as they can accept.

And like someone else mentioned, the subjective parts of your application often are not considered until after interview invites. It's easy to knock down 1000 apps to 250 based only on numbers. Then those 250 are sorted based on subjective aspects, which includes (but is not limited to) the interviews.

Too true, favhrnstr! The numbers game is so tough to play.... I have my fingers crossed, but I'm still planning ahead if things don't work out like I'd wish them too 🙂

I'm in the same boat. I'm terrified, but luckily I only have 3 days more to wait at a school I interviewed at (and one school I haven't heard from at all). I got an interview, and I thought I did well. My main interviewer told me I did very well, too, but as we get further from the actual day I was there I'm second guessing myself. I thought it went well, but what if it didn't? I'm sure they tell everyone they did well.

My GPA is ok, just slightly less than average of what's accepted, but my GRE is higher. I have experience, not a ton, but what I do have is quality, and the vet I work for wrote one of my reccomendations, and he told me he talked about how smart I was and how much he's been able to see me grow and how qualified I am to work in the field because of my compassion...etc. I have a lot of extracurriculars and service, but I really hope its enough.

My parents are convinced I have nothing to worry about, but everyone's friends and family say that. They said they were at least proud of me for applying because they know people who just don't apply at all.

So, who knows what will happen, but good luck to us all! :xf:
