Abstract: I was rejected from the 2 schools I applied to, after scoring an interview and making it to "the final round" at my number 1 choice school. I've remedied the weakness in my application to my number 1 school in a significant way. Are my remedies significant enough? Do I come up with a brand new essay for reapplying to my number 1 or could I use the great personal statement I crafted last year to submit to the 7 or so schools I haven't applied to yet?

Full text: I was rejected from one of the 2 schools I applied to because it was a high-volume-of-applicant-type state school where I'd be from out of state, and I applied in October. I applied in October to meet the one year residency requirement of the number 1 choice school that I want, as I'd have lived in that state for one year in October.

I got an interview at my number 1 school and knocked it out of the park- when both interviewers state that they wish we had more time to visit and they want me to meet Dr. so and so- you know you did well. I met all of the GPA, MCAT, volunteer, clinical experience requirements, pre-req requirements, except I didn't have the first item mentioned in the Post-Rejection Self Assessment the school sent out. The first item stated "strict priority is given to state residents that have long term presence in the state". I've only been in this state for 1.5 years now. I was rejected in the final cycle of rejections that were sent out.

So my plan is to reapply to maybe 8 schools this year, with my number 1 staying my number 1.

How I've remedied my application to my number 1: To remedy the "long term presence" criteria, 4 months ago, I got a job that has long term presence regarding community health in the state. I got a job researching a suboxone program at a remote, rural FQHC, identifying which specific processes and interventions that make the program successful and pulling data points for evidence. Also, I've changed FQHC policies to increase suboxone program capacity and stream line a historically complicated intake process that requires a level of literacy that isn't always present, which has been a barrier to accessing health care.

The other part of my job is starting a Hep C program at the FQHC, which is in an area with an exceptionally high percentage of PWID and consequently have high rates of Hep C. Besides my job, I'm volunteering with a needle exchange program, going out on the mobile unit each week to participate in harm reduction in some of America's poorest communities, at people's homes.

My background is EMT, CMA, phlebotomist, with 6+ years of ER, urgent care and rural FQHC experience, more recently moving into the new work mentioned above. 3.3 c/sGPA. Non Trad with a liberal studies undergrad and chemistry minor. 502 MCAT, or was it 504? Can't remember. Volunteer work here and there. Bilingual. Research experience in my undergrad years. The schools I want to go to are lower tier state schools with primary care and community health emphasis. Passionate about transgender healthcare, as I am a gender non conforming person who gets along fabulous with both deviants and geri's. I suppose I am "out" in my application because of the gender identity and pronoun preference questions in AMCAS- didn't seem to be a big deal in my interview. Strong LORs. I read all but one. Mountain bike enthusiast who gardens and makes a mean beef jerky.

One part of the advice I am looking for is regarding my personal statement or whatever it's called these days. I wrote a damn good personal statement last year, and I hate writing about myself- believe it or not. The 7 or so other schools I'd apply to this year wouldn't have seen last year's statement before, if I am correct about the application process. I'd like to know how bad it would look to re-apply to my number 1 with a very similar essay as last year, with solid remediation of the criteria I was missing in the first application. Of course, I'd make a few tweaks to reflect some of the new experiences I've had in the past year. Or should I come up with a whole new essay?

The other part I am looking for advice on is: do non-biased readers think my changes in work and volunteer experience, as I've explained them, reflect that I have a long term presence in the state?

Thanks for reading. Nuggets of wisdom for reapplying are appreciated.

Add a one or a two in front of the number of schools you plan to apply to.

That’s how you should approach the next cycle.

^^^ Yup. Given your numbers, you absolutely must apply to more schools, including a bunch of DOs.

As for your PS, I believe you need to craft an entirely new one because you get only one to submit with the primary on AMCAS. If your #1 is really going to be your #1, don't give them reused stuff. Adcoms compare previous applications to current ones and if I were an adcom and saw that your PS is virtually the same, I'd peg you as lazy and wondering why we gave you an interview last year. You'd be moved to the bottom of the list.

Your activities don't help your residency status. You're being compared to thousands of applicants who have true roots in that location.

But why does that particular school HAVE to be your #1? If the residency requirement is a major obstacle and there's no real way for you to remedy it except to go back in time and move there earlier, then cast a wide net and consider yourself lucky if you get into a US medical school.

If your goal is MD, your best bet is to retake the MCAT and add way more than 8 schools. A 3.3 GPA and 504 MCAT is not the best formula for MD as both are very far below the 3.73GPA and 511 MCAT average for matriculants. If primary care is your goal, your current stats could get you into DO, but you'd still need to add more than 8 schools (atleast 15).

You should obviously retry at the state school if you got an interview this last cycle, but @bears1992 is right when they say DO schools are more in your wheelhouse

Why only 2, then 8 schools? Are you stuck in your location - like kids you refuse to uproot from their schooling or something?
