I would like to ask some questions to those people who have been invited to UPenn interview.. What kind of extracurricular activities did you guys do and how much did you do?

I came to the US about four years ago and didn't have enough time to settle down in the environment and do a lot of activities, but I did 2 year hospital volunteer works and 1.5 year restaurant work and 1.5 year laboratory works and dentistry shadowing and all that..

I didn't join any predental organizations. I guess I should have done that, but I really wasn't expecting to get a rejection for the lack of extracurricular activities..

My gpa is 3.92 and I got 26 for the DAT. Of course, a predental student needs more than just good grades, but I didn't know extracurricular activities meant that much.

UPenn has been my top choice and right now I'm just depressed~

if your grades are that good and they gave you the big N-O, then you can give them the big F-U. your a great candidate don't let it deter you. I'm sure everyone else will agree

and by that I mean don't dwell on it, it will mess with your head. good luck with your other schools!

You did not get rejected because you did not join a predental club.

Maybe you were rejected because you are not a citizen (tougher for non-citizens) or for some reason they were confident you would not go there if accepted.

Lastly, I would call if Penn is important to you.

it makes no difference if you're a permanent resident or U.S citizen app wise.

Financially it does, so it worries schools that you won't be able to pay the 4 years. Non-citizens don't get the same assistance we do I think.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Um i agree with that statement to a certain extent. I became a citizen during my second year of college.. my financial aid package only increased by like $1000.. i doubt that's the factor in rejecting a student.

And pluto, sorry to hear :\. I knew EC's are important since high school. In fact, I only got into my college because of them.. due to my shietty SAT scores. Don't be too bummed out! I'm sure there are lots of schools to choose from by looking at your stats!!

Undergrad tuition (public) is like 5x less than d-school.

Also, I was talking about loans. I don't think internationals get loans like we do. They have it tougher or something. Again, I am not too sure about this.

O im not sure if she/he is a citizen or not.. but I was talking about citizen vs. some1 who holds a green card (I was referring back to Chrono's post 😛) . It is true that internationals have a tougher time getting loans tho.

And my undergrad cost 46,000 a year.. :scared:

Well, it will be an easy transition for you to dental school financially. 🙂

you have great stats so you're bound to get an acceptance into another great dental school.

have you tried calling upenn and asking them what the main reason for your rejection was? might give you some closure. who knows, it might not be the ECs because you have the hospital work, research and dental shadowing down.

it will then most likely come down to 3 choices
1) bad LOR
2) bad PS
3) a mixup with another candidate.

Let us know after you call them. I applied there too with less stats and I'm worried now.

I'm just curious. Where did O.P. go for undergrad?

So should i go to interview with my bank statement showing them i have 300k and that i am capable of paying for my education?

I thought this too, but then he said he had a 26 DAT. I'm assuming he meant 26AA, and its the US DAT not canadian. A 26 AA will surely confirm that his ~4.0 was non-inflated, no matter the school he came from, unless it was a CC since schools don't like that.

Wow guys -

Thanks for all the cheer ups

I'm embarrassed to tell you guys that I am a US citizen since I was born in the States but then grew up in South Korea. I spent three semesters in a community college and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

As someone above pointed out, I'm guessing that the fact that I went to a community college played a big role in their decision lol.

Well anyways, to those who are applying for this cycle, good luck to you all and thanks for the advices-

Ah, you're talking in terms of finances. I am a permanent resident...but I'll be a U.S citizen in a couple of months (so definitely before I begin dental school). Should I notify schools that I'll be a citizen very soon so it becomes a non-issue (if it was an issue in the first place).

Sorry buddy, I really don't know much about this. But definitely ask someone who does.

Did you take your prereqs at the community college or just general curriculum courses? This is the only reason I could imagine for this having that big of an impact.

Bottom line: call them and figure out why. Something isn't adding up.
