Hey everyone! I've recently trimmed my dental school list down to two schools below! I would like insight into some factors as well as opinions on what to do among these schools!

School 1: UPENN
Pros:
  • Ability to specialize is much higher I've heard
  • School "name"
  • I've heard that the school works on getting students in clinic early through assisting during D1 and D2 year
  • Not as stressful D1 year (Fridays free for D1) I've heard
  • Honors Programs and lots of different resources to support students interested in a variety of things (research, volunteering, etc.)
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Philly is a bit unsafe I've heard
  • I'm a bit concerned about clinical experiences, can someone elaborate on that
School 2: UIOWA
Pros:
  • Clinical experience starting end of D1 year, great clinical and patient pool.
  • Cheaper to live
  • Iowa City is safer
  • supportive community
Cons:
  • Worried about specialization if I wanted to do so (or if so, how often do Iowa graduates specialize?)
  • In the middle of nowhere, so it might be harder for me to de-stress at times
Summary: I am in consideration of both, I think both schools has its own pros and cons, however, I wanted to know if clinical exposure for both schools would make a difference in possible specialization opportunities if I apply. I am aware of cost differences, however, I am not accounting for them in sake of purely the experiences of the school. Thanks!

I did not attend Iowa for dental school but did my ortho residency there. Iowa has always had a great dental school reputation and is actually a nice place to live. I don't see any issues with being able to specialize from there as long as one had competitive stats. For me, it would be a no brainer...Iowa 100%.
