I heard and I won't claim it as fact because I cannot back it up, that NYCOM hasn't really accepted anyone with under a 28 MCAT yet this cycle, they have either been waitlisted or accepted to the Medprep program with under this score. NYCOM is now even requiring their BS/DO students to get a 3.6 and a 30 MCAT. seems like an impressively competitive year...

Don't be scared... Go give that interview your all and make them say wow he/she needs to go here... Good luck! But don't be nervous I know it's hard to do but looking back on it there's no need for a mental block on interview day due to stress

Haha exactly another reason why you shouldn't really believe what you read on SDN. I got in and definitely had below a 28....

I know a few people that graduated from this school and did NOT have a 30.

Kind of lazy to search, does NYCOM have a preference towards in-state and surrounding-states residents?

sinfest,

the doctor i worked for graduated NYCOM in 2006. They do have a "regional" preference, but there are people who do get in from across the country. Its similar to PCOM and their regional bias. I think they take a large amount of PA residents and a good amount from the surrounding states but do accept many people from across the country. I do know that NYCOM has 2 different start dates for when they begin interviewing IS and OOS applicants. I believe they begin interview IS applicants in october and OOS applicants in November. That is just what I have heard, so take it with a grain of salt. Hopefully a NYCOM alum or current med student can come on here and comment more.

Thanks buddy 👍

Notice the poster said it was for THIS cycle not previous ones. The poster also said it was something that was heard and that they weren't sure it was true.
I can say I do believe the BS/DOs must get a 28 through 30 MCAT to complete their program( this is new starting THIS year) Admin is constantly talking about increasing the averages, I know the class of 2013 had a gpa average of 3.65 and a MCAT average of 29.5, if those help. But remember it's an average there will be people accepted above and below these numbers

I got accepted for 2011 and my MCAT was a 24 =)

Exactly.

From NYCOM's website:
. Quick Facts:

Class of 2014: 279
Female: 57%
Male: 43%
In-State: 80%
Out-of-State: 20%
Average MCAT: 27
Average overall GPA: 3.6

So we are to believe last year the school had an Average of a 27 MCAT but this year they take nothing lower than a 28?

Yes but what about the actual original question? Has anyone actually received a rejection notice from NYCOM? Pre or post interview...

Though the class of 2014 has a MCAT average of 27, the class of 2013 had a MCAT average of 29.5, so it is very possible!

Pretty sure the BS/DOs need a 26 or 27 - that's what I remember the BS/DOs in my class (2014) telling me.

Sick of waiting, so I called NYCOM this morning. I actually got a hold of someone who was willing to talk with me about my application and the process in general, which I understand is a bit of a rare opportunity. Anyways, the long and short as I understand it is that NYCOM does not send out routine rejections. He basically expressed to me that if you haven't heard by this time about an interview invite, then the admissions committee has given you a "silent rejection" (my quotes, not his). He then suggested that I consider applying Caribbean, which kindof pissed me off on a few levels- first because I have 4 interviews as it is, and second because what happened to advocating for the "DO approach?" Not exactly great news on the phone this morning, but at least it is information.

Disclaimer -- I was dumb and didn't write down this guy's name, so take this information with whatever weight you feel is appropriate. I got the impression that he was not an adcom member himself, but rather someone who worked closely with them. His information may be wrong or incomplete, but it did sound like he knew what he was talking about for the most part.

Thanks for posting this information!

It's pretty common knowledge from the past few admissions cycles that NYCOM doesn't send out formal rejections - and fyi, they're not the only school that does so. I'm a NYCOM student now, but I've had similar experiences with other schools, or some that didn't send me the official rejection until August. At that point, why bother? What a waste of paper.

Sorry you dealt with someone rude - NYCOM isn't exactly great as far administrative issues are concerned. However, I partially understand - how many other similar phone calls do you think they get from other applicants everyday? A TON. I know I'd start being a douche, too.

Not much has been common knowledge about NYCOM's application procedures since they changed them this year.

I didn't say he was a douche. Just that it irked me he suggested I apply Caribbean. I'm a rare and valuable flower, and he hurt my feelings! 😉

As far as an official rejection being a waste of paper, it may seem that way to the school but I feel that applicants deserve some timely notice. I think it is a little bit rude to give absolutely no notice, not even an email, to applicants that have already jumped through so many hoops for the school. Not to mention the money we paid to apply. We applicants need to make plans for the future, especially this time of year and considering the ridiculous deposit system that exists to save seats at DO schools. We played NYCOM's game applying, I feel the least they could do is bang out an email.

To NYCOM or Touro NY? 2 different schools

Ha...ha... ha... i see what you're implying there.

Our average MCATs of admitted students are the same. and our average GPA is .1 lower than yours. You cant tell the applicant pool for the two schools apart (unless youre doing a geographical analysis, then im sure all the long island people would tip you off tom NYCOM)

Haha really no pun intended... Both schools are in NY, NYCOM is older and more established, has more rotations, a goodmatch list, things we don't yet know about Touro. I really didn't mean my post in a negative way. I hate talking bad about any school. I was accepted to Touro-NY also for the class of 2013, along with NYCOM, LECOM( all 3 campuses) and a list of other schools. I choose NYCOM because it was more established. I actually meant that Touro-NY is not NYCOM, as the OP called it NYCOM in another post.

For the first class, Seton Hill and Eerie were seperate applications? You can only get accepted to one of the two currently.

ah k. then no worries. I figured you were stoking the inter-NY rivalry.

carry on

I don't know how it worked... When I applied for the 2013 class I sent in one application to Erie and one to Bradenton. I interviewed at Erie and Bradenton. Then I got acceptance letters from Erie, Bradeton, and seton hill. Ironically I got accepted to NYCOM and two other schools 2 days before the Lecom deposit was due... Lucky

Seton Hill is part of Erie (in terms of admissions).. so they probably put you in the Seton Hill campus..

I'm glad we all clarified and made sure that NYMMED did NOT in fact get into all 3 campuses. I mean come on, that's impossible!

Actually its not impossible, I received a letter of acceptance from Bradenton. I also received an Admission package from Erie, with 2 separate acceptance letters in it. One for LDB-Erie, and another acceptance letter for Seton Hill. I also got a form to fill out and send in with my deposit asking me to check off whether I will be accepting a seat at Erie or Seton Hill... They came in the same envelope but are 2 separate acceptances. I also interviewed on the first possible interview date at Erie, and the first week at Bradenton...

Okay....wait....NOW we're clarified. Thank goodness!

Nycom is still handing out interviews. I got an invite today, 28MCAT and 3.6GPA from CT.

Cool man congrats!! No love for me. I'm from CT also- my MCAT is higher but your GPA is better than mine. Meh.

Hey dont give up... Apply June 1st this year (or whatever the first day of apps is going to be) That should give you an edge in the application process... By any chance is your GPA above a 3.4? In that case applying early next year will definitely get you an interview. But im assuming your MCAT is good 29-30+ish b/c of what you typed... Good Luck

Don't give up hope yet! They probably just recently started tackling more OOS people. When were you complete? I was complete around mid-October after my Sept retake.

Thanks guys. It's OK, I did get a few interviews including my top choice school so things are still good. If I don't get in it'll be a different story haha.

Is it ok to write a letter of interest to the admissions office after an interview. This school is really my top choice.

Didnt you just interview? I would send a meaningful thank you note to your interviewer for now, and not a letter yet

Yes I interviewed last week. I did send a thank you letter.
Of corse I won't send the interest letter now. I just wanted to know if it's acceptable to send a letter o interest after a few weeks in the case I did not hear anything. I have a few other acceptances that need deposits and I don't want to have to pay for if Nycom accepts me.

yes i definitely would! i think they truly want people who want them so getting your name out there would be helpful....and at that point It can only do good anyways right? Unless poorly written, there is no way a letter would hurt your chances after a few weeks

But I think you'll hear soon!! I always stay positive 🙂
