one school emailed me an interview date. i already have an interview scheduled somewhere else on that day. i was wondering how to go about telling them to consider me for an another date. should i:

1. simply say i'm not available on that date, but i really would like to interview
2. or is it alright to say i have an interview at another place that day, but i really would like to interview.

also how do you simply turn down an interview. do you just say
"i will not be available to interview, please withdraw my application"

i'm thinking too hard, i know. just dont want to piss anyone off in the chance that i dont match and need to reapply there next year. thanks.

Just be honest. They know you are applying to other programs, so tell them you are interested in their program but unfortunately you already scheduled another interview on that day. Ask if they can reschedule you.

If it is far off, double book the date.

I say this because you never know what other interviews you are going to get; you still may have to do some rescheduling.

But, as soon as you know what your schedule is going to be, contact them (by phone) and ask them if there is another possible interview date. If not, decline the interview.

They're not going to give you a hard time or blacklist you.

thanks for the replies and your advice.

cool idea: i'm going to wait until after Nov 1 to turn down the interview invites. this way whenever i get a rejection from a good school, i can vent by rejecting to interview at a school i dont like. this way i also can pick up ideas on rejection-geared syntax use. heck, if it works, i can cut and paste. kinda like a chain letter from program to applicant to another program. while being professional. actually, more like a recycled gift.

Just be careful about re-scheduling the inteview date more than 1 or 2 times for the same program. After several re-schedules, programs often note this on your application and it can go against you. It may not be fair, but it can happen.

The program assumes that you are not seriously considering their program so that's why you are re-scheduling the interview several times.

Haha, that's a new one...

Say you apply to 20 places, and 10 give you interviews while 10 reject you. 10-10=0 Does it mean you wont be going to any interviews then? 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
