Hey guys,

I'm going to be applying to dental school this year and I'm from Texas. I want to go to an instate dental school. If I don't get into an instate dental school this year, I will consider out of state schools next year after working to bring up my GPA/DAT/etc.

Which of these options would you suggest following:

1) Just apply to in state schools this year. Do dental schools see all the other schools you've applied to and does this look bad?

2) Apply to a bunch of schools, including out of state. Would it look bad if I got an interview or acceptance from one school and then rejected them - for instance, would they even consider me the year after that since I rejected them?

Thanks!

1. No
2. If you get into any dental school and refuse to go and reapply the following year then you should expect to answer a lot of questions. Schools wont trust you in the future and might opt out to reject you rather than waste their time. Its a gutsy move, so my advice would be to only apply to Texas schools if you dont want to go anywhere else. Otherwise if you get into an OOS school and don't go then you'll shoot yourself in the foot for the next cycle.

Davaidavai1 is right. You should apply to instate schools this year and not OOS schools if you won't even consider them for this application cycle. If you turn down an OOS school interview invite, then you can be sure that they will be hesitant to offer you another interview the next application cycle. I wouldn't do that to yourself. If you would consider OOS schools and maybe accept their interview offer, then do apply to OOS this cycle. Otherwise, don't hurt your chances in the long run.

I would say apply to instate and a handful of your dream out of state schools. Like OOS schools you would still be okay going to if you don't make it instate. Because honestly, you don't want to waste a year of your life on just Texas schools.
