Does anybody know if a residency program can reject an application/deny an interview without having evaluated an entire application, i.e. just after receiving CAF and USMLE transcript, especially if they claim to look at the entire application and not set any minimum score requirements?

Thank you for your answers.

it may suck, but programs can do whatever they want when it comes to interviewing/rejecting applicants. Rejections before the whole application in complete (i.e., no Dean's letter) is not uncommon (especially for FMGs and those applying to competitive specialties)

can I ask what field you are applying in?

I am applying for Surgery and I am US IMG. My LoRs and medical school transcript are arriving by the end of this week. Plus the Dean's letter hasn't come out yet. So my application is far from complete, yet somehow already rejected by one program.

they can do whatever they want, with the consequence of it being a reflection of their residency program. do you have something that might be a red flag about yourself in your application (like commiting a felony)? seems closed minded to do such a thing, but i'm sure thats just the way it goes. it could be anything and i wouldn't take it personally if that happens. the program director, for example, might personally hate your school or the faculty members that wrote your letters. you still have time to apply to more programs if your worried about matching. good luck.

just read your message...
some surgery programs do not consider imgs, period. it sucks. especially since many imgs are smarter and better docs than some of the dipshots at my med school. thats just the way it goes. keep your head up.

Unfortunately, these posters are correct. Programs are not required to download ANY of your application if they don't wish to.

In addition, it is true that even if you had a stellar application some programs only look so far to see if you're an IMG, and will not download anymore information after finding that piece of info. Some programs don't wish to have any IMGs, others require you to have an ECFMG certificate to APPLY (not just to start on July 1).

So, its tough luck but I suppose you could always appeal your case to the program in question.

It is unfortunate, because I do have a strong application and having researched the programs, I applied only to those that were "IMG friendly" and didn't require ECFMG certificate prior to the interview or submitting an application. I guess, in reality the programs don't match their words with the actions.
