Hey guys,

I just took my AAMC 9 and am pretty bummed. I was averaging about a 36.4 on my exam AAMC's with a range of 34-39 with the 39 being most recent on AAMC 8. My timing was SOOO off especially on verbal which I found insanely hard. I missed a bunch of questions on the last passage because of it. As a result I got a 33 on AAMC 9 (12/8/13) so I am very concerned about my verbal! My concern is obviously getting an 8 in verbal.

Since my perception is all relative to my scores this is a huge decrease in my score and makes me very worried that a similar occurrence can happen when I take my actual AAMC in 1.5 weeks!

Any advice would be much appreciated since I am pretty bummed right now. How can I assure that a mistake like this with timing won't happen? I seriously ****** up verbal. On a better note, I got a 12 and 13 on PS and BS respectively.

Just for reference my scores were

3: 34
4: 36
5: 36
7: 37
8: 39
9: 33 (12/8/13) <---- the verbal

Only on SDN would a 33 be considered "bombing." You got a 39 on AAMC 8. Sorry, I have no sympathy here.

Feel free to not answer, but please don't post just to insinuate that I should not be concerned when I get a score that is vastly different than my previous performances.

We all live relative lives and try to do the best we can.

That being said, I don't think WE can do anything to help you. Rather, analyze why did you did so "bad" (facepalm). Were you not familiar with content? Tired? Distractions? Did the planets align the wrong way?

No it was my timing on verbal. It was my verbal score that was a bomb. My breakdown was 12/8/13. So I did bomb the verbal.

Why though? What made this verbal so much more intrinsically difficult than the others that you ran out of time?

I feel like you had to be distracted.

I have no idea. I did everything exactly as I did previously and I got to passage 7 with 2 minutes left.

Luck of the draw then, I suppose? Those humanities though.

Not sure if passages in 9 were longer. I don't really remember. The passages on my actual MCAT were slightly longer than FL passages though, so prepare for that.

How did you adjust? What strategies did you have in order to make sure you completed on time.

I just did what I normally did for FLs. I normally finish with like 5-8 minutes, but on the actual I finished with around 2-3 minutes. The general consensus is that passages were slightly longer, though it could have just been test nerves.

I really do feel they were longer though, like a paragraph or so on average.

A 33 only? Fill out your local fast food cashier applications asap.

Ha, appreciate the sentiment but it doesn't look good to ADCOMs to see such an unbalanced score.

Raise that verbal one point to make it a 9 and thats the average of pretty much higher than 1/2 the medical schools. No reason to freak out

Come on people! Instead of deriding @sillyjoe provide him with support and constructive criticism. The fact that the average MCAT test taker scores x, or that 33 may be a high score to you is irrelevant to sillyjoe's current predicament. God forbid we galvanize someone who is aiming to perform above the average test-taker.

Hi Joe! Okay, so you got slammed by the domino effect on your last Verbsies passage. That clearly distorts your VR score. My question to you is: why do you think that you faced time management issues? Perhaps it was one passage in particular? Were you running over time on most of the passages? Have you experienced this phenomenon before in practice passages (i.e. - TPR, EK101)?

No this was really the first time. Bad day I guess... That's why I am not quite sure what to adjust moving forward.

Sounds like an outlier to me. Do you have any extra VR passages to work on before your next AAMC FL? It may be prudent to shake off any jitters, or at the very least test your time management of VR passages once more before writing an FL.

That's a good idea. I think I am going to try that. I will make a mini exam with passages and work on timing.

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

Since you've done really well and its been consistent, something was definitely different about this one. Just think really hard about the possibilities/variables, if it doesn't come to you after much thought just consider it a fluke and pretend it never happened. By all means don't let your confidence down, realize that there is a reason and if you cant find it than it appears that it shouldn't happen again. Not very specific help, but hopefully it will help you find your problem.

You really just answered your own question bro. Just work on your timing for the next time I'm sure this verbal score is just an outlier.

all you haters on SDN this is what I have to say to you:

@sillyjoe I wouldn't be disheartened. Looks like a fluke and from your AAMC average, you should (and will) do great on the remaining practice tests and the real deal. Supplement with TPRH/EK101 (whatever you desire) if you need extra practice. Good luck!

As far as the haters are concerned:

You don't have to respond you know.

No one's asking for your sympathy.

Ok I can actually answer this form personal experience because on my first AAMC I did the exact same thing. My verbal was far below my other two scores (14/11/15) as compared to all my other scores where verbal was up there with my other two scores. On the day I took that verbal I was just completely blown out. I completely forgot to use my tecnique, and when I realized this, I freaked out some more. It is just an outlier due to stress, how to prevent it, stay calm, meditate. Take a minute of your break after PS to breath deeply for a minute and find your center so that you can approach with a clear head

Also, the people who are complaining can go **** themselves. Different people have different goals, just because someone is doing better than you doesn't mean you have to be a whiny prick about it

EDIT: I just noticed one of the people doing it has a profile pic of Einstein. lol

Does this make you feel like a big person? When you become an adult you will realize that people don't like to be around or associate themselves with people who act like this. Being a physician is a profession that entails respect for human beings. Before you acquire this trait you will not do very well in medical school or life.

LOL this reminds me of a thread a while back where someone asked about the MCAT immersion trip and whether it was worth it and 3-4 people proceeded to bash the OP for even thinking about shelling out so much money for that program.

Just as no one should tell you how to spend your money, no one should tell you what your goals should and shouldn't be. I know a guy at my school who averaged 40+ on the AAMCs and ended up getting a 35 because he got shafted by a hard exam. He was angry about it. Obviously 35 is a good score but wouldn't you be miffed if you hit 40+ on the practice tests and then came away with a 35? People have different perspectives.

EDIT: The "you" refers to the people bashing the OP

Hell, while I understand a 35 is a great score, I would be miffed too. Not because I wont get in somewhere, but because I knew I could do better. I dont care what other people are scoring, I care about myself and my own capabilities.....kinda like how everyone should
