Its inevitable. You'll learn the hard way though. You'll probably do a few things here and there. Most likely you're gonna do a composite on someone and guess what... they'll have sensitivity issues for a while and you're not gonna hear the end of it. Oh, they'll probably gonna bitc.h and moan about the injection hurting and that "it never hurt before".
These people do have insurance right? 😀
I just tell my family members that it will cost them double as retrobution for all the grief they gave me growing up!😀
maybe if i explain to them about overhead and cost of materials they will leave me alone..that would be the decent thing to do .. i hope they do it
my immediate family parents/siblings aren't the ones who are asking of this..its my other relatives and friends who start showing me their mouths and say "you'll be able to fix this right? in 2/3 yrs? when you graduating again? " :/
A good rule that was discussed before (don't know if it was on SDN or dentaltown...?) is to simply say that you will offer free or discounted care to anyone that assisted you financially during dental school. It's so legitimate that few people would actually get pissed if you stuck to it.
Also, they're not necessarily asking for free care...just glad to have someone they know and trust to be able to call. (Also, they're saying they have faith in you!) 🙂
Like talking to a brick wall. People who are not business owners do NOT understand this. Doesn't matter how hard you try to explain it. In their minds, if you charge $850 for a crown that is $850 that is going towards your ski cabin in the Swiss Alps. 🙄
You will ALWAYS be a rich dentist and your fees will ALWAYS be too high. That's what people will think and you just have to live with it.

That is a good idea. I'll be sure to bring it up if someone ever asks about getting free dental care.
I agree about the people not necessarily asking for free care. I have a brother-in-law that owns a mechanic shop and I take my car to him when it needs to be worked on. I don't ask for a discount but I go there because I know 100% that I won't be overcharged or lied to as a customer there. I think many people have that same trust issue with dentists.
Well, if it's ímmediate family, for me charging would be out of question whatever it is, but for the cousins, uncles and aunts who expect free treatment, I tell them that I am charging only the lab costs if it involves labwork and for other work, I do a major discount and charge them only what really would have costed me. It helps build relations. Well, it works ok for me, but then, sometimes it is a difficult situation and you can't help it.. Just be nice to them and the benefits comeback one way or the other....like referrals etc...
