I did a lot of religious EC in college like going on a trip to Mexico and leading small groupls, but I've basically denouced the religion.

Do you think I should mention it? Otherwise, it just looks like I only took classes in college with a light courseload. But in actuality, I was spending a lot of time in a religious organization that was cultish and demanded a lot of time.

Am I the only one who thinks this could be worked into a pretty interesting personal statement?

I think I'd come off as sounding bitter.

Did you take anything from your experience besides being bitter? Was helping in Mexico fulfilling on a personal level? Use unique experiences to your advantage. I wouldn't let it be the theme of your statement, but it's worth mentioning, especially if you think your load of classes might be called into question. Be creative with how you present it. You do seem bitter, so have others read it over to help weed out that tone if you use it in your statement. For ECs, you don't need to be specific about the religion in the name or short description space you're provided.

I hear most schools avoid getting into religion and politics in the interviews, but you could certainly explain anything you wanted there if it did. But again, just like anything else, focus on the positives.

I went to Mexico for a month in 2002 and ran around trying to convert people. We also volunteered at orphanages and did some construction. Maybe I'll just leave out the trying to convert people part.

I also was a "small group leader" I could spin that as some sort of mentorship sort of thing.

Haha. You're right, maybe leave out the conversion fest. That's always a touchy subject as to who is actually benefiting. But service to the greater community is fair game.

I was 20 when I dropped religion, and I have the same dilemma as you. I was involved in a student ministry, and we did a lot of mission work (they always tried to help out the poor, but at the end tell them they can fix their problems by finding jesus LOLZ).

What I am doing...is I'm going to mention the programs I did (homeless missions, kids club, etc) WITHOUT mentioning it was affiliated with a religious student organization. I don't want the adcoms to think I am still delusional.

I want to do that too, but the organization's name has Church in it and other "Christianese" and when you mention "missions" that's also a dead giveaway.

I have one EC that was a youth camp for underpriviledged kids, which I can keep on there. I feel like if I add other religious EC on there, that would be a dead giveaway that the camp was a also religious.
