Hi to all non-trads out there. I was accepted to the U of M for 2011 but I currently live about an hour away from campus. I've talked to many current students that said it would be very difficult to live that far from campus. I also have a family with a 20 month old.

We are having difficulties finding areas around campus that are safe and family friendly.

How has anyone else dealt with relocating your family to be close to your med school?

(Minnesota? Michigan? Mississippi? Missouri?)

If the current students you've talked to have families with young children, then their feedback matters. Otherwise they probably can't conceive of the issues you need to balance. If you get to walk to school but your child is the only baby in a heavy-partying neighborhood, I fear for your marriage.

An hour commute each way will grind you down in ways that a 20 or 30 minute commute will likely not. Is there a community closer to school?

Best of luck to you.

I'm going to guess from pass threads that you are talking about the U of MN. If so, I would highly recommend that you attend their off-campus housing fair on March 1st. There are quite a few decent areas within a 20 min radius of the campus. The off-campus housing office will be your best bet in helping you find available housing (which can be more of a challenge). I would NOT commute more than a half hour to campus (and ideally not more than 15 mins).

I second this. If you can't find something RIGHT THERE next to the school, just try and find a family-oriented suburb or neighborhood that is nearby (closer than where you are now). You will be the only one who can decide how to prioritize the factors that are important to you and in which areas you are willing to compromise. Price? School quality for your child? Your commute time? Quality of the neighborhood/available housing?

I am in this same situation, and the area we found near the school is great, but very pricy. That's my compromise: paying more money for living in a family-friendly neighborhood. It's not perfect, but life rarely (never) is. Good luck OP! :luck:

Maple Grove, Plymouth, Richfield, Bloomington, Roseville, Edina are all close enough and pretty safe.

Maple Grove is a great suburb and is only about 20 minutes from the U.

I was visiting last year and saw a few nice places on the other side of the river. I'm not sure about the public school system. Good luck!

Sorry I should have specified U of MN. We are leaning towards something more expensive since we don't want to live in an all student area, and want more safety than nearby campus provides (dinkytown etc.) I want to be at the very most 20 min from campus either driving or busline. Being near a busline would be great since I could read during that time. We are looking at areas near Lake Calhoun at the moment.
