Have any of you had experience remodeling a pharmacy? Any tips on how to educate patients on the remodeling to prevent complaints for temporary increased waiting times? What about educating patients on a new pharmacy flow? (Changing from a bank teller type system to a drop off and pick up type system)

How much of a re-model?

Does the State Board have to approve plans?

Can it be done overnight or over a weekend?

I have been involved in several of these. PM me with specific questions.

1) Brining in new furniture, brining in robotics, new computers at every terminal, and a new way of processing prescriptions that will likely result in some needed training of the patients for the patients to understand...

2) You know who I work for so you should know the answer to this question!

3) It will be done over a 5 day period and business will stay open during this period. We are closed on sunday though

Remember, I am old so I don't remember who you work for. When we do a remodel like that, it's done overnight so as not to disrupt business. They have a plan of what they will do each night so the staff knows what to expect each morning. There has to be a pharmacist there with the overnight staff.

We did a remodel like this at my employer. It was all about telling the vets in advance what was going to happen, and then repeating it over and over and over. We used flyers stapled to the bags, lots and lots of signage and many face to face "warnings." Such as "next week when you come in, you'll have to go down the hall to see the pharmacist. There are signs on the wall. *point out signs.* If you forget, we'll have people here to help you." During the first phase of the remodel when the lobby was really messed up, we had an extra staff member or volunteer on duty at all times to direct traffic. It went OK. There are always those who don't understand or pay attention, no matter what you do. For those people, there is the Patient Advocate to hold their hand and listen to them rant. 😀

Okay, so it's really time for a dementia review. Now that you are back stateside can I assume this is an outpatient gig. I have been through several of these with my employer and it works like this. Do all of the construction overnight or after closing. Have a detailed schedule of what get's done each night. The pharmacy has to be functioning when the crew leaves each morning.

As for patients getting used to the new work flow, it won't take long.
