Say my situation keeps me outside the country for another 18 months and I don't want to wait till then to start my pre-reqs.

Would it be a huge negative if I did my pre-reqs through some distance education program?
While I could probably arrange proctored exams, I would obviously not get the lab components done.

Thanks in advance.

Mostly, yes. You will be at a horrible disadvantage basically killing off the opportunity to apply to 90% or more MD colleges. Some DO programs won't do it either, but if you do the online UNECOM program, many DO will open their doors to you.

U of Toronto has online biochem that I think is worthwhile, but that's only helpful after you have the prereqs. I think there's less stigma on online work from a regular university (vs. a U of Phoenix type biz).

Can you take math & statistics & English and such online, and wait on the prereqs until you're back stateside?

Best of luck to you.

Many big state universities have online classes available side by side with regular ones. It is basically the same class that is indistinguishable from a normal one except for the fact that it meets online. The only problem is that you may have to fly in to the U.S. all the time to take tests if those are in person.

Oh I wasn't even considering taking them at a lolcollege. I mean I would take them at Harvard Extension School if I have to. I only need 2nd Chem, 2 Orgs, 2 Bios. All those have labs obv.
I mean HES even has a formal distance pre-med postbac program (I would't qualify since I have 1/2 of the courses already completed).

Such arrangments typically require some sort of proctoring setup and I think I could get that done, just not sure if there is a negative stigma associated with doing something like this.

While we are on the subject someone brought up biochem. Could you please tell me what the de facto prereqs are especially if gunning for harder schools?
Biochem on top of regular ones and that's it? UG anatomy?

Thanks.

Prereqs vary by school. Review the websites for the "harder" schools you're "gunning" for.

There is a reason why I am asking about additional de facto prereqs. I obviously can go to websites and read. Such websites do not list the unspoken prereqs such as the ones I learned about here: shadowing/volunteering.
In one of the threads I read it would be "crazy to apply with a bare minimum". This lead me to believe there were more classes that needed to be taken. Did I read into that comment too much and bare minimum is fine?

no you read the comment correctly, but you misrepresented the context here. the other thread was all about you gaining admission to a top 5 med school, which is specifically what you asked about. many people apply and get accepted with the bare minimum prereqs and ECs, just not at top 5 med schools. not at top 50 med schools. if you changed your mind and are no longer talking about top med schools, tell us and our advice will shift accordingly.

Will it say on the transcript that it was a distance education program? Many of the programs sound like ordinary colleges and it may not even come up.
