Renting a Car for Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wanted to see if anyone that has interviewed in the past has any experience with renting a car (specifically if you are only 21)? I have interviews at LECOM and NOVA so I wanted to do both interviews on one trip, but the schools are 3 hours apart 🙁

You need to be at least 25 to rent a car at most places. Is ubering a possibility for you?

I mean yeah I could uber but its a 3 hour uber and idk how many uber drivers would want to drive me lol. Also, I know typically it's 25 but Ive heard of some companies that will let you rent a car but they just charge you a lot more than someone that is 25 year or older.

Yes, you can rent a car if you are under 21, you just would have to pay more like you mentioned.

Above is correct. It used to be 25 only, but now you can rent younger than 25 as long as you pay an additional fee. It'll still be cheaper than a 3 hr uber though...

If you have any kind of account with USAA, they waive the under 25 fee. Also, if you have a credit card with US Bank, they cover the insurance so you don't have to purchase that additionally which could offset the under 25 fee. I'm sure other credit card companies have a similar deal.

Hertz ? 21. But it's expensive. You'd better take a bus or greyhound if you can.

What do you mean the schools are 3 hours apart? Isn't NOVA in Florida and LECOM in Pennsylvania?

Rented a car up in Michigan at the airport. Interviewed there the next day and drove down to Ohio to interview at OSU. Took the car to the airport and returned it, flew home. Worked real well!

Second this. This is what I did for all my interviews! Anyone can make an account on USAA, and the fee is waived by booking a car through them.

Just checked USAA and you must have a family connection with military service. In my family, the most recent service was in WWII. How on earth would I document that, as all of them are deceased?

No one in my family has any connection to the military, but I was able to make an account. It was considered a non-military account, but that still allows you to rent a car through them.

Right you are. I just hung up with a CSR at USAA and it is called an ABC membership. Thanks to cooliak for suggesting this.

When I interviewed at LECOM, I rented from Fox Rent a Car. There was an additional charge for being under 25, but I think it was the lowest I found between all the other companies. Ended up being like $60-70 for two days.

Hey dude, use the app TURO to rent cars. you can probably find one for cheap. onyl thing is you have to return to the same location. or work out a deal with the owner.

The dental school is in Florida. I believe the medical school is in Pennsylvania.

Actually the dental school for the first three years is in Florida. Then they split up the senior class in half. Admin sends half the senior class to Pennsylvania and the other half to Florida for clinic.

I'm doing the exact same thing, I got a Frontier flight into and out of Tampa, so I'll do the drive toFt. Lauderdale Thursday right after the LECOM interview and then back after Nova. Flying home from Miami was a lot more expensive, so as long as renting is under $100 or so it works out pretty well, except all the driving haha.

Use the app tuoro. Ppl let you rent out their own personal cars for really good prices. Plus you don't have to be 25.

It helped me a lot when interviewing
