this probably sounds dumb, ok i have never had to rent a place before, so this is a new experience for me. can the references be your friends? what about credit? what if you do not have bad credit, you just have NO credit at all. i am a little clueless about this whole apartment/house renting thing. any advice you have about getting a place would be much appreciated! thanks.

It usually depends on the lanlord. My lanlord was pretty laid back, so I just used a friend as a reference. Also, if you don't have substantial credit, they'll usually ask someone with established credit to co-sign your lease, usually your parents are the best option.
