Some schools have you buy the equipment whereas others you rent. I compared the costs of renting at one school and purchasing at another and they were about the same (NOVA/ULSD)? What do you guys think about this? Has anyone asked a school that rents if there is the option to buy? I know that you get a better deal at schools that have you buy since they are purchasing in bulk.

i have heard that renting is more convenient and ends up costing less because if your instruments break or get lost or stolen, if they are rented they will be replaced/repaired by the school much cheaper and easier than trying to buy a new one or get it fixed on your own. plus they sterilize them and stuff for you, and at at least one school i know of you just check out what instruments you need each morning and return them for cleaning at the end of the day, and so you never have to carry them home or remember which ones to bring or anything like that.

Which schools offer the option to rent equipment??? I assumed that most or all require the purchase of equipment.

all 3 schools i have interviewed at (see below) encourage or even mandate that their students rent part or all of the instruments from them.

We rent. There's no way I'd want to own that equipment after graduation. It'll be used and outdated.

Thats a good point. It is kinda nice to own but by the time your out you would want new instruments anyway so its $ down the drain. When you associate is it customary for the established dentist to buy equipment for you or let you use theirs?

No idea. I'm sure it goes both ways. I mean, we aren't talking about chairs and junk, just handpieces and whatnot.

For Case, we are expected to buy most of the equipments: burs, impression trays, composite, curing light, wax, etc (since we have a Henry Schein at school. The equipments that we have to purchase totalled to around $7500. I know other schools just rent curing light and get unlimited supply of composite, burs and wax, but at Case, many of the stuff that you will need have to be purchased.

you'd obviously know better than I 😀 somehow i thought we were told that you had to rent from them though. maybe i am mistaken and they said you have to buy specific equipment from their selection. sorry if i mislead anyone, i will quiet down 😳
i also interviewed at a fourth school today and they said that you buy about half and rent about half.
