Does anyone know if there is any particular research that we should try and do before we choose our top 3 assignments, or if its pretty pointless because we REALLY have no say so in the matter...???

Needs of the AF will come first. You will be given a list of bases with openings. You will be asked to rank order those bases by your preference. Our personnel people will work hard to get you something in your top 5, but again needs of the AF will come first.
As far as researching goes, you won't need to do much until you get the list. Then I'd recommend looking at what the community is like in each area. If you have kids, you may want to get some info on schools, etc... Then the decisions you make will be more informed and you'll be more likley to enjoy your assignment.

The Army will contact you your senior year and give you several choices of what is available. You will then be able to give them your top 3 out of that list. That is the point that you can then research out where you want to go out of that list. Unfortunately, not every base has openings, or if it does - there many be 20 other people that want to go there. Those things influence what can be offered.
What you could do now is to decide whether you want to go specialize, or go overseas or not. You can also use the time in your summers to do internships at different bases or specialty programs you may be interested in.
